Being a dual lane road on a national highway it is very possible to miss the beautiful views the pass has to offer. The pass has average speed camera control ensuring people don't speed, but I would advise that you take it even slower and enjoy the views. On the Cape Town side you have the entire peninsula stretched out all the way from Somerset West to Simonstown and the Cape Town CBD. On Grabouw's side you have the beautiful forests, mountains and the Steenbras dam. There is a lookout point on Cape Town's side, but it's a bit difficult to take the turn off when going towards Grabouw so I recommend you pull off on your way back. The road quality is very good and it's dual lanes on both sides of the mountain so you hopefully won't get stuck behind a slow truck.

My son drove and for once I could enjoy the view.
Although we were going towards Elgin, the Landrover is a high vehicle and it allowed me to be able to still enjoy the view towards False Bay.
It is always a pleasure to drive this dual carriageway and on a Monday afternoon there wasn't much traffic.

The pass offers beautiful views in both directions and there's nothing to be gained by scrambling to the top of the hill - the parking area makes for a quick photo stop. Just watch out for the baboons - don't leave your car doors or windows open or they will bolt in and raid it for food. However it is good entertainment to watch others who haven't been advised.

We had mixed weather across the Pass but the views were incredible & absolutely stunning when the sun shone. The road climbs to quite a height & there are useful viewing points

The dive is fairly easy at it is on highway 2 which runs from CT east along the coast. We were driving west so you only get to see the best of the scenery by looking behind you, which is not the best thing to be doing while driving, so it is best to see it while driving east.
There was quite a bit of angry cloud hanging over the hills but this didn't spoil the impact of the scenery.

We had gone over Franschhoek Pass and I was shocked to see that the Theewaterskloof dam at it's foot was only a stream of water. There really is a drought. We checked the Villiersdorp side - it was "better". We then drove up Viljoen's Pass on our way home from the Mother's day drive. My son said let's see what GPS says about Sir Lowry's Pass traffic. It said there is a 51 minute delay - my son said okay let's see what that is about. He could not understand because it was a normal weekend.
We got onto the top of the Pass just after the Steenbras Dam and there the traffic was. The Sun was still still shining and when we got down it was dark - it was indeed a 51 minute delay. I didn't mind because I wasn't driving. I could take all the sunset photos to my heart's content.

When the air is clear, and wind not too strong this viewing site at the top of the pass offers absolutely breathtaking views of the Cape Flats, False Bay and Table Mountain. Well worth the stop.

This is a great pit stop at the top of Sir Lawrie Pass and well worth stopping for a few minutes as the view is just stunning, you can see over 20 kms, looking over False Bay and nearby Somerset West. It is also a favourite place for paragliders to launch themselves, some do so with ease, others do not!

Framing the experience this route takes you through the mighty nature which offers breath-taking views, steep mountain slopes and vineyards. We did this pass on our way from Hermanus to Cape Town. It’s one of the most picturesque site to witness in western Cape.
