Fascinating archaeological site that offers low key explorations without the crowds normally experienced. If there are tour buses, just sit back and relax or go down the road for a glass of wine. The tours are on a frantic schedule and soon will move on....More

Some tips. Tour buses pull out shortly after 11:00 so if you arrive then you have the place pretty much to yourself. Informative video details the ruins and how they may have evolved and looked during the ages. Numerous poster boards and then you are...More

As part of our day trip this was a place I wanted to visit. When we got there , all we saw were the views of Souda bay and remains of a castle. Although the views were stunning, we never got to see anything else.

Archaeological site with great views. Only €2 to get in. The helpful guy at the ticket kiosk explained the area and gave us a simple map outlining the cisterns, theatre and other remains. There's a room in the centre with lots of information boards but...More

Only 2 euros each and free for little ones. A lovely sun trap with none of the large groups and tours (evident from the small car park) some really interesting buildings. Especially the underground cistern and the theatre which are in fantastic condition. The site...More

Roman Hellenic city over a hill overlooking the Akrotiri Bay. Beautiful Roman theater perfectly restored. It impresses the length of the wall circle that embraces this altar to demonstrate the vastness of the city. But apart from the theater, a villa, the spas and the...More

Aptera is not as well-known as Knossos and, as a result, peaceful and not crowded. As another reviewer has noted on here, it's a bit of a hidden gem. Getting here was easy. From Chania it was a 30 min drive. A couple that recommended...More

From the harbor to the Ruins, probably a 30 minute drive. We rented a car the whole time we were in Chania. We have traveled over lots of Europe over the years. Some places are simply public transport is the way to go. And... More
