What an incredible day, it couldn’t have been any better. Captain Wayne was extremely knowledgeable, he made sure we saw as much wildlife as possible. We saw lots of whales and Wayne went the extra mile to make sure of that! A great day out, I will definitely be going again. A must do if you are visiting NL.

Captain Wayne and Phyllis took us out on a private tour for 8. The weather was threatening rain but we managed to get out and back before any precipitation started to fall. The scenery and education were wonderful. Captain Wayne is also a talented artist so several of us bought paintings to take home as reminders of our fabulous visit to Newfoundland.

Captain Wayne's was great. If you are up for a small boat on what can sometimes be choppy seas, I would definitely recommend it. We were able to get close to the island in the ecological reserve with numerous puffins, common murres and razorbills. Then when news came of whales in the area we were able to get to them quickly. The larger boats were not in the immediate area of the whales (I suspect because they cannot move as quickly). We were very lucky and saw humpbacks breach multiple times. The small group and amiable/ knowledgeable Captain Wayne made the trip one of our best experiences in Newfoundland.

Captain Wayne's whale watching tours are exceptional. Captain Wayne is very well informed and can spot a whale if there is one to see a mile off. Learned a lot about the birds in the area as well. The only way to go for a whale watching experience in Newfoundland. Thank you Captain Wayne and Ethan.

What a great 2 hours hours - comparable with the birth of my 3 children - my wife thought it was better for obvious reasons. The trip past the islands was awesome seeing all the see birds compounded by the puffins, guillemots and the razor bills - upfront and personal. This was surpassed by the trip out in the bay where we came across a mother humpback and her calf - they were absolutely amazing. Captain Wayne is clearly passionate about his business and enjoyed the trip and much as the 10 of us on the boat. See you next week or the week after Captain Wayne - Ian, Delia, Adam and Louise.

We recently took Captain Wayne's excursion after it was recommended by a friend who had previously done it last year. She was right, it was a fantastic experience. Captain Wayne makes it a memorable trip. It a smaller boat than the big guys out there and its very personable. He has such knowledge and it like going out with a friend but one who really knows his stuff and wants you to enjoy the area and all it has to offer, from the multiple species of birds to the whales and he does not fail and his mission. We loved it and would definitely make part of any future trips to the area. Thanks again. Jane & Giorgio from Motreal.

One my hearts desires while on the island of Newfoundland was to see puffins and whales, as I have never witness one in the wild before. Our first stop for this bucket list item was Witless Bay Ecological Reserve.

Captain Wayne Marine Excursions was our first choice, when deciding which boat tour to join. He designed and built his own boat, just for the purpose of viewing wildlife within Witless Bay. Catering to photographers and wildlife aficionados, he only takes out smaller groups of people. Captain Wayne offers three tour times a day. In the morning there is the, “Early Riser Tour” it offers calm seas and low winds most of the time, which is perfect for photographing from a boat. After lunch there is the, “Wet and Wild Tour” with a possibility of windy afternoons, which can lead to more spray. And then there is the, “Evening Light Tour” it is by far my favourite for photography. There is beautiful golden light cast across the islands and the wildlife, which leads to magical photographic opportunities.

We signed up for both the morning and the evening tours. It was a beautiful day when we arrived at Captain Wayne’s Dock, the sun was shinning over the boat casting reflections into the pristine blue bay. Captain Wayne mentioned that his boat tours are a, “No heels, no flip flop kinda tour!” And that he has actually had people try to come aboard with unsafe boat footwear. He got us outfitted into some stylish floaters jackets, to help keep us warm in the cooler ocean breezes and if anything were to happen, keep us afloat in the freezing Atlantic Ocean. As the boat disembarked from the dock, the excitement started to grow that over the next two hours we would see humpback whales and puffins galore.

Captain Wayne pulled in a cove with towering sedimentary rock cliffs above, turned rusty red from the salt water. Emerald forests stretched along these cliffs and Captain Wayne even pointed out a bald eagle sitting atop a nest. As we headed out of the cove, someone spotted a spout of spray jetting into the horizon. Then we were off on the trail of the glorious humpback whale, Captain Wayne teaches you how to spot the path of the whale. You can actually see their white fins with black spots under the water, it appears as an amazing teal green colour. Captain Wayne is very respectful of the animals, he knows how to get close without disrupting their personal space. One of the humpback whale's that we were following had a rope from lobster trap entangled in his baleen. We floated near the whale, so close that we could have reached out and touched it. Captain Wayne contacted the proper authorities on the radio, so the whale would be in good hands.

Next Captain Wayne steered the boat towards Gull Island, a great nesting place for seabirds. Lets just be upfront, if you are fearful of birds this is definitely not the tour for you! Thousands of seabirds will be flying over head, plus countless more will litter the island before you. We spotted guillemots, razorbills, black-legged kittiwakes and common murres, all here on this island to nest and raise their young during the summer months when the food supply is high. Puffins dotted the grassy knolls of the island, here they burrow to make their nest.

Captain Wayne pulled the boat into a calm cove near a large rocky outcrop, where there was a lone bachelor puffin sitting atop the rocks. He eyed the boat quite curiously, then began strutting his stuff and posing for our cameras. We sat there for some time photographing our little model.

Captain Wayne’s Marine Excursion was by far one of my favourite boat tours in Newfoundland. The small boat size was perfect for getting close to the birds on the island, as well as the whales. Captain Wayne’s passion, knowledge and respect for the wildlife in Witless Bay really shines though. It made me fall in love with the area even more!

Second time with Captain Wayne and both were incredible. Kids both times loved it and so do the adults. Small boat means you can get in closer and with only a few of you all your questions get answered. This trip no whales but some great sea life and birds galore. Captain Wayne’s enthusiasm is infectious and knowledge boundless. He is so great with the kids as well. We had an awesome time! Captain Wayne is a must when coming to Newfoundland. You really get that warm neighbourly hospitality.

Unfortunately for us the fog rolled in as we motored out off the jetty which meant there were no whale sightings despite Captain Wayne trying his best and liaising with other tour boats on the sea. Despite that we did enjoy the tour as we got to see a lot of the birds on the sanctuary island and Wayne did his best to keep spirits up with his jokes - don't give up the day job though Wayne OK! What I really liked about his tour is that the boat is small and the tour is much more intimate plus if you do get a whale sighting you can get up close and personal. If you are looking for a whale watching tour in Bay Bulls go with Wayne, you will enjoy it.

Captain Wayne's was our second boat tour in Newfoundland and it was super. Don't be fooled by the simple shed at the harbour - it's a small operation but the love, pride and professionalism is obvious from the minute you step into the office. Wayne is extremely knowledgeable and experienced and it's clear he cares greatly about the wildlife as well as the safety of us passengers. He pointed out interesting aspects of the behaviour of the puffins and birds that we saw, got us really close to the puffins and the photographers in the boat got some fantastic shots. I chose this tour because I read an online article about Captain Wayne being a good choice for photographers - this is true! There weren't any whales that day but it was a great tour nonetheless.
