Got there early and hired a guided 2 hour boat trip . Only people on the Laguna so the peace and ambiance exceptional. OK the guide was in Spanish , but he had a visual guide to the birds so no problemo. Saw Ibis , Tricoloured Heron , Egrets , Plovers , Spoonbills and Flamingoes etc. Take binoculars as an essential. Walked on an island with Iguanas strolling around.…

I wish we had read the reviews before we paid so much for a boat trip with a person who spoke no English, to cross the lagoon, spend half an hour with seven iguanas, then go across to another part of the lagoon where we could about twelve flamingos, but only from a distance - all in all, very disappointing.…

We saw the Laguna de Oviedo in a Dominican tourism app and thought that it looked great. As we were stopping in Barahona we we're only about a 45 minute drive away. It's easy to find and it was empty when we arrived. I think it was very expensive (only if you're having a guide, which you'll need, but the cost was an issue for us all around the Dominican). We opted for the comprehensive all included tour which was supposed to take up to 3 hours. The boat ride out on to the lake was lovely, especially with the cooling spray on such a hot day, but I agree with yz1991, I was actually suprised by the lack of birds we saw. The walk on to the iguana island was pretty cool and it's amazing how close they come up to you. Then we went to see the flamingos where we also got out to cover ourselves in mud, which was fun. It rained heavily for about 10 minutes after that, but I was really suprised to discover that we were going back to land, so essentially we saw iguanas and flamingos and maybe the occasional different bird, but that was pretty much it. The vast majority of the tour is taken up by the boat trip, but couple that with the fact that the guides only spoke spanish, which of course is fine, but I think we lost out quite a lot not really understanding anything. Beautiful - yes, peaceful - yes, nature at it's most serene - yes, but worth £40+ for what was pretty much 2 hours in a boat and 30 minutes on an island with igunanas, I'm not so sure. Hand on heart, I wouldn't return, that said, if you are staying in the area and money isn't an option for you, I'd certainnly reccomend it, but would I drive or do a tour to here from maybe Santo Domingo, no I wouldn't. That said, the very best thing about this day was that the guide took us afterwards to what is possibly the clearest lake you can possibly swim in. A nice cold fresh water lake full of the fish that you normally pay stupid prices for to have them nibble your feet, well don't bother .....here they will do it for free the moment you jump in this amazing lake. It's only small but by far the best part of the day ............ if you'd lilke to go, it's called the 'Laguna Arroyo Salado,' you can thank me for it later!! :-)…

I was staying in nearby Los Patos so took the local guagua here. As I was on my own the boat trip option at 2500 pesos for 2 hours was too expensive so I chose the walking tour .This was still 1500 pesos plus the park entrance fee. The receipt I received was only for the entrance fee which always makes me suspicious ? Not sure where the visitors money is re invested but certainly not in the toilet facilities ! Had a pleasant walk around the lake with a nice young guide who only spoke Spanish but was knowledgeable about the birds and had a bird guide with him. We saw flamingoes, kingfisher, terns ,sandpipers and several other species. However it had rained the night before so it was very muddy underfoot.…
