On the pacific coastal side the Whangarei Heads you will find the magnificent 5km long Ocean Beach. The Beach is surf patrolled through out the summer months and is a well known beach for boogie boarding and surfing. The water is crystal clear during the summer months and there a fantastic views from the sand dunes at either end of the beach. There are some great rock pool exploring to be had at low tide at either end of the beach. This has to be one of the most spectacular beaches in NZ. It will take you approx 35 minutes to drive out to this beach from Whangarei and aprox 15 mins from Parua Bay. Highly recommended!!

Drove along the mainly inland route across Mt Tiger Rd which is hilly and scenic and returned along the Whangarei Heads Rd. The Beach is approx 35km from Whangarei and at the end of the road there's a sign to Beach Access where there's a large car park and restrooms. We started to stroll along the beach path but looking... More

The drive to it seemed long and of the main road but there is a car park van a great place for the camper van to have lunch. The beach is massive clean and fairly flat but with a few dunes. There is a public toilet and freedom camping is allowed.

Travelling from Onerahi to Ocean Beach in a car you see lovely coves along the Whangarei Harbour and spectacular volcanic rocks at Mt Manaia and on to Ocean Beach which had good surf and a dedication to a boat that was sunk by a German mine in WW2. We returned to the harbour's edge having a NZ wine at the... More

Stunning, enthralling, what else?. An astonishingly beautiful white sand beach on the east side of Whangarei Heads. It will take you 30 kms down the peninsula but it's absolutely worth. The road give access to a small parking and then the beach and the Pacific Ocean: you can sunbath, swim, surf. If you feel daring you can climb the dune... More

Wonderful beach to surf, swim or walk. Bring a picnic and walk the tracks. Cool off with a swim in the surf.

Besides having beautiful beach there are connecting walks along the top of the Mountains you will need to allow up to 6 hours to make it up to the top along the ridge and back down to Oceans beach there are also others walks too that take you to other beaches not to kid friendly unless they are like mine... It's Truly an untouched natural coastal area well worth a visit. Just 30 mins drive from Whangarei City via Mcleods Bay . While the sea can be very rough the views are beautiful .There's a good Surf Club on the bay to enjoy by the "brave swimmers" but in my opinion its not for paddlers unless you stay close to... More

Marvelous beach Just a 30 min drive out to the coast from Whangarei city, watch the power of the surf crash onto the beach, walk the beautiful untouched bay and even collect seafood at the far end of the bay. Its a great place to just sit and enjoy mother natures creation at her best with the wild ocean breakers rolling into... More

We, being my family, have lived in this area for 35 years and have spent many hours on 'Ocean Beach'. It is a great beach for children but do be aware of sea conditions when the lifeguards are not on duty. It is a fantastic beach to just walk and 'appreciate' our beautiful coast.

Took a detour off the SH 1 en route from Whangarei to Whangaparoa, from Waipu to Warkworth.. Well worth the detour as the scenery is stunning! Ocean beach is a long curve of white sand, great for walks.
