We spent a day touring the Mengdingshan Tea Plantation during our recent trip to Chengdu. The mountain is about a two hour drive from Chengdu, and the scenery, once you get there, is gorgeous. Our tour started with us picking tea leaves at the mountain's foothills. After about an hour's worth of picking, we took the tram about a mile up to the top of the mountain. While our tea was drying, we toured the mountaintop admiring the view from above. Then we, along with a master roaster, roasted our tea. The process took three separate roasting steps, and the skill of the roaster was something to behold. Her hands kneaded the leaves in the hot bowl until they were roasted to perfection. We then took a part in the tea ceremony, and had an opportunity to purchase some delicious green and jasmine tea. For the rest of the day, our hands smelled like fresh fragrant green tea. All in all, an unforgettable experience.

I went to Mount Mengding several times in different seasons, each time, it will surprise me in different way. Recently i went there in early April, which is the spring for most part of Sichuan province. Everywhere you go, it is covered with green tea trees and the air there from the foot of the mountain to the top, had been so fresh and clean, you will even be drunk by it! i walked all the way up to the top, along the ancient stone stairs, lining some really old temples, some are not used today, but can still remind you of the old times with crowds of people rushing to the mountain to burn incences in front of the Tea Father,Wu Li Zhen. It is a nice and cool place to go hiking, peaceful and quiet.

The mountain has a vista point that, on a clear day, you could see an amazing view of all the surrounding mountains. Aside from that, not much else to do/see here on the mountain. It's more for the locals, and people who are already nearby. If you have limited time to spend in Chengdu, maybe not make this mountain a priority (like I mistakenly had done.)

First, do not go on a rainy day. It will be cold, wet and without a view due to thick fog.
We turned around and went back on a more pleasant day. What a difference.
Second, do visit the Tea Museum which is English language friendly (mostly) and worthwhile especially if you are a tea aficionado.
Third, do take the cable car up to the top of the mountain. It is inexpensive and your feet will thank you. The road to the top can be slippery so if you have any trouble walking or with balance, take the cable car both ways.
When you first arrive you will see the giant Teapot good for group photos, The cable car and shops are further past the teapot and the museum (large building clearly marked) to the right. Going up the cable car you will see row after row of the tea plants that look like low dark green hedges. The leaves you see are not used to make tea. It is the new shoots that come in the spring that are carefully plucked to start the tea making process.
On a good day the view from the top is beautiful with the surrounding mist covered mountains. The temple on top is peaceful.
Go on a nice day and you will have an enjoyable visit!

The day I came it had rained in the morning and was clearing. The result was quite good visibility when there would usually be a haze. Being April Sichuan has turned a beautiful dark green, except for the numerous light green Ginkos that are on the mountain. Lots of mature trees and near the summit are some ancient large Ginkos. On arriving at the mountain we saw a giant teapot which was great for group photos. Then we did some tea picking for an hour. Caught the cable car up the mountain for 15 rmb per person for one direction. There is a restaurant and a temple up there. Walk through the temple to get to the track to the summit where there is a fairy maiden statue and an imperial tea garden. Great views of the countryside and Ya'an city from the mountain. Overall a fun day.

Take a cable car (with questionable maintenance standards) up the hill and get a view of the countryside. At the top learn a little history of the area. A big deal if tea is your thing otherwise just a plesant day in the Chinese countryside. Views are best at the Maiden's statue.
People watching was a joy where the vendors are negotiating prices for loose tea (by weight) while tour busses are loading ... customers leaving leads to dropping prices ... and customers are chasing missed busses.
