This gigantic black beach in Waitakere Ranges Regional Park was the most impressive thing about Auckland and, actually, of the the whole Northern Island. It is less than an hour's drive from Auckland and the beach is gigantic and black. Be careful, this is one...More

The area has tons of hiking - I recommend taking the Zion Ridge track and then loop back via the beach. Lots of space, so you can easily find your own spot to relax.

Soft dark sand. Refreshing not too cold sea with good waves to play around in. Wonderful cliffs to walk along. Great day out.

Immense, beautiful black sand beach with scattered shells and lively surf. Would have been happy to spend several hours there. Short walk to a gorgeous waterfall. I loved listening to the water and taking in the natural scenery. This is a very special place!

Is the best place near Auckland. You must have a car. The road is not the best, but the beach is the unique one in the world. Dont hesitate about the road and the advertished of danger.

Looking around it's easy to imagine that not a lot has changed here over the last 200 years. Rugged hills and valleys covered in native bush form the back drop to the large sandy beach and wild surf. Karekare is 32km a 60 minute drive...More

It was rainy and windy when we went and we had to take our shoes off to avoid getting them soaking wet on the walk to the beach but it was worth it. There was a waterfall on the opposite side of the parking lot...More
