For a unique arts and conservation day-out, visit Rotoroa Island in Auckland’s beautiful Hauraki Gulf. Rotoroa was New Zealand’s first and longest running addiction treatment centre until its closure in 2005. Today, after a five year redevelopment programme, the restoration of heritage buildings and the construction of an award-winning museum and exhibition centre, it is a conservation estate rich in social history. Swim, relax, explore; sandy beaches, heritage buildings, exhibitions, nature trails, art, boutique accommodation and more.

We visited Rotoroa Island yesterday, it was a wonderful day out and very educational. The Fullers ferries are always great, always on time, fab service and clean! It's always such a beautiful trip out into the Gulf. On arrival you are met by island staff who do a quick briefing and check of food. Please remember you need to take... More

The island used to be run by the Salvation Army many years ago and alcoholics were sent here as pert of their "drying out" period. Today it remains a treasure, reminding us of our past endevours and an island sanctuary for some of our rare birdlife, including a breading program for Takahe. The island has a wonderful museum, and original... More

Myself and 3 12 yr old boys stayed in the SuperIntendents quarters for the long weekend. Fantastic weekend. Being picked up off the ferry by the local host and having our bags transported to the lodge was an unexpected bonus. Very clean modern basic accomodation set up - dishwasher, lots of fridges, great space etc and great value for money.

We've been going on for awhile now and couldn't recommend Rotoroa more. Six of us went over last weekend for a boys overnight fishing trip. The Island is small enough to navigate around extremely easy and can be fished from any point and ledge. We stayed at the Superintendent's House which has a big kitchen area so we could all... More

11 of us came over last Friday night and stayed at Serenity. We just had to bring all our food and beverages and everything else is supplied. The house was absolutely brilliant - great décor and well appointed. They have thought of everything here right down to hot water bottles, beach towels, free wifi (loved that!) and a great kitchen.... More

My mate and I took our kids for a dads and daughters weekend and stayed in the Superintendents House. The weather was stunning for us and the accommodation couldn't have been better. Clean, crisp and modern. Super comfy mattresses on the bunk beds (although a little short - but I am 6ft 1). The kids loved it and so did... More

A party of 16 of us - 7 adults and 9 children recently spent a long weekend at the Superintendent's House on Rororoa Island. It is the second time we have visited and we're looking forward to next time...The house is extremely well-equipped for large parties - 2 ovens, 2 dishwashers, 2 sinks, 2 barbecues, a large expanse of stainless... Great place to stay and unwind. We stayed in Serenity house no.4 and it is very comfortable and well equiped. A very short walk to the beach, perhaps one of the best in the Hauraki - Lady's bay. Ginnene and Phil do everything they can to make your stay comfortable and relaxing.

We took a trip out to Rotoroa Island just before Christmas and had a great time exploring the island, despite a rare day of wet weather in an otherwise sunny spell (we had booked in advance so accepted the weather). The weather conditions were sufficiently poor that ferries to Tiritiri Matangi had been cancelled and our ferry terminated at Rotoroa... More
