The best way to get Valaam island is to take boat trip organized by Vodohod company. River boat itself is very comfortable, boat team is very friendly, helpful and doing all their best to organize your rest during trip. Valaam island is fantastic place with unique atmosphere and breathtaking views.

A marvellous island! Unique coast line would make you happy while you are there..You can set up a tent and watch beautiful sunset. Also you can hire a bike and circle around the island browsing magnificent cathedrals.

A mindblower - alace to visit for anyone who goes to Russian Karelia/Lake Ladoga in summer! Monastery area with not-so-well-kept buildings and surroundings. But the athmosphere is magical...the main church is magnificient and the nature around the islands just great!

My wife and I have just come back from a 6 week trip to Russia and Europe. One of our dreams was to visit Valaam island as pilgrims on a spiritual journey. The tour operators that worked with our operator in South Africa, refused to organise a trip to Valaam because we would be the only non Russians on the... More

When my husband and I enquired about visiting Valaam island, the tour operators informed us that this is not a trip for us as we will be the only non Russian people on the boat. They were not prepared to organise this for us. My husband then wrote to Dmitry Batenkov at Parallel 60 in St Petersburg. He was fantastic!... More

We visited as part of a cruise and were shown around by a local guide with a strict time frame before the boat would depart. The site is very interesting, however the guide seemed very intent on giving the ENTIRE history of the site, in great detail, in the limited time. The orchard, trees and 'back buildings' were covered in... More

Valaam, the ancient monastery on the archipelago in Lake Ladoga, is reachable from Sortovala or from St Petersburg on a hydrofoil. We took the day trip from St Petersburg on a late August day in 2006. The hydrofoil leaves very early and gets back late, but it is a glorious trip up the Neva river, past the Schlisselburg fortress and... More

Top place to go, if going to russian karelia. Archpelago is beutiful and monastry is great. Monastry has renovated and when we visited main church was underconstruction (was potatoe storage in soviet times and valaam was seamens hospital). You can take boat from Sortavala app 45 to 50min to Valaam several times a day. There are also boat trips from... More
