Girls ski trip to France with Canadian Guides?!?!? Heck YES!!!!!

5 of us ladies took a leap of faith with Cloud Nine Guides, and checked our bucket list to ski the Haute Route this April 2024.

A few friends questioned our choice of why we didn’t choose the local France guides, and here are a few reasons we choose to go with Mike (and last minute program guide- Jack):

- Mike has been there approximately 15 times and knew the route more than some of the other guides we met. He was extremely familiar with the route, huts, and also learned from prior years experience to have backup plans in the event of weather/avvy changes, so all situations were covered

- We took a previous AST2 course with Mike, so I knew his risk tolerance, he knew ours, and I knew we could hang out for a week together on a mountain (not all the guides I saw I would have wanted to spend my 2 week holiday with) so that was in our control as well

- We had a pre-trip meeting with Mike prior to our trip departure to go over the trip in details, discuss gear, packing, any last minute details and questions

- After meeting some of the groups throughout the week, we found our guide had kept us the most safe by having has roped up, on belay, etc. in comparison to other guided groups that were left to climb without crampons on some steep, consequential, glaciated terrain, and some other groups were envious of our guided experience when sharing stories at the huts with other groups.

- Our first 2 days of the trip was unfortunately cancelled due to high avalanche danger, which was disappointing when you book time off work, spend the money, etc. to make the trip happen. Although it was a bummer, we knew Mike was keeping our safety top of mind at all times, while trying to manage our expectations. Unfortunately there were a few deaths in Chamonix and Zermatt that week, so we didn’t question his final decision on go - No go.

- The few things I would note for future travellers that is not mentioned by C9:

#1- plan to spend an additional $1200-$1500 on food expenses (especially with exchange rates) that are not included in your trip price. The hut expenses add up quickly with drinks, apres food, water you have to buy, and lunches for the next day.

#2 - Ask about having a 2nd ACMG guide to tale your group potentially.

Reason: if there is not a full 2nd ACMG guide in your group, it will affect your groups ability to split if needed. We saw a few groups that had injuries along the way, and the tail guide was able to split off with the main group to help that individual, without the whole group not having to turn around or not finish the traverse. We were lucky our group didn’t need to split at any point, but I think if our group were to do another international trip, we would ask for a full ACMG guide to tale us as a backup, because when you are going that far, it’s worth that assurance (for us anyways).

#3 - we were required to buy trip interruption, cancellation, and medical insurance. It’s absolutely worth it, as we are submitting claims for our lost 2 days that are non-refundable. It took some nudging and prodding to help get the backup we needed to submit to insurance, but in the end we received everything we needed to make our claim.

We had many laughs with Mike and Jack, they took heckling from us 5 ladies all week, they took some amazing photos with their big cameras, and they truly did take care of us for the week. We felt safe the entire time, we were stoked the entire time, and we truly had the trip of a lifetime.

So YES…… hire Mike and Cloud Nine for that big trip. It’s a decision you won’t regret.

A tremendous experience with Cloud Nine Guides on the Intro to Multi-Pitch Climbing. Not our first course with them, won't be our last. Professional, friendly, knowledgeable, fun.

Dustin is an excellent instructor, made it simple and easy to learn all the steps. Made for a really fun day with a great learning outcome.

Our 2nd day we put our newly learned skills into action with Mike guiding us, and it was a fantastic experience. Both guides were super friendly and had a vast depth of knowledge and experience, which made for a fun day of safe learning and skill development under their guidance.

Definitely our go-to for courses and professional guiding for the future. Highly recommend Cloud Nine Guides, couldn't ask for a better experience. Great value and a great outcome, we feel confident to take our new skills out into the mountains ourselves.

I was very impressed with our crevasse rescue course. Our instructor (Mike) was extremely knowledgeable, and a great teacher. I'll definitely be using cloud 9 for further mountaineering/ climbing courses. Thanks for the instruction Mike, the experience was top shelf.

Robbie provided an outstanding backcountry ski touring experience for us, far exceeding our expectations. His leadership made us feel safe and comfortable while providing the perfect level of challenge. We got to ski steep and deep chutes, beautiful glades, and a glacier. We also summited a peak and saw some stunningly beautiful parts of Banff National Park near the Icefields Parkway. You can't do any better than Robbie and Cloud Nine Guides if you're looking for a custom guided experience.

I did a guided climb of Assiniboine with Cloud Nine Guides. It turned out to be a wonderful 4-day trip. After two years of waiting due to covid, forest fires, heavy winter and other calamities, the conditions were perfect early September of 2022. I could hardly wait any longer.

My guide was Brent. He is very passionate about his job, safety conscious, and a fun person to be with. We flew with a helicopter to Assiniboine Lodge. What a breathtaking scenery and spectacular views of Assiniboine from the helicopter! The approach to the Hind Hut, especially the Gmoser Highway, was a good mental preparation for the next day.

We climbed the North Ridge of Assiniboine the next day. Climbing was tough – lots of loose rocks, scree especially in the lower sections. Higher up the rock was cleaner. The views got better with every step. There were about 4 sections where Brent belayed me. Luckily the weather was great. There route was completely dry, although, now knowing it ahead of time, we carried ice axe and crampons just in case. I could see how dangerous this mountain could be in snowy/icy conditions and adverse weather. When we finally got to the ridge the whole world was below us. We had more than half hour to have lunch and enjoy the incredible scenery. We did 4 rappels on the descent. Brent took a lot of care to ensure rappels are done properly, and taught me a bunch of things about rope safety. Getting back the Hind Hut was a huge relief with a big sense of accomplishment.

The Hind Hut is a lovely place to spend a couple of nights. It offers magnificent views of Assiniboine and the surrounding area. It turns out Brent is also a meal specialist. He had super tasty dehydrated meals which he had made himself! We climbed Strom and Wedgewood in our third day. We returned the same way on our fourth day, including the return helicopter flight that offered more amazing views. All in all - a highly memorable trip.

Thanks Brent & Cloud Nine!

Justen Bruns did a fantastic job leading our group of seven on a crevasse rescue course. We appreciated how he took the extra time to sit with us at the end of the day and talk about any questions that had come up. I think it's safe to say that all the members of our group would readily choose Cloud Nine for any future trips we have in mind.
