I did a guided climb of Assiniboine with Cloud Nine Guides. It turned out to be a wonderful 4-day trip. After two years of waiting due to covid, forest fires, heavy winter and other calamities, the conditions were perfect early September of 2022. I could hardly wait any longer.

My guide was Brent. He is very passionate about his job, safety conscious, and a fun person to be with. We flew with a helicopter to Assiniboine Lodge. What a breathtaking scenery and spectacular views of Assiniboine from the helicopter! The approach to the Hind Hut, especially the Gmoser Highway, was a good mental preparation for the next day.

We climbed the North Ridge of Assiniboine the next day. Climbing was tough – lots of loose rocks, scree especially in the lower sections. Higher up the rock was cleaner. The views got better with every step. There were about 4 sections where Brent belayed me. Luckily the weather was great. There route was completely dry, although, now knowing it ahead of time, we carried ice axe and crampons just in case. I could see how dangerous this mountain could be in snowy/icy conditions and adverse weather. When we finally got to the ridge the whole world was below us. We had more than half hour to have lunch and enjoy the incredible scenery. We did 4 rappels on the descent. Brent took a lot of care to ensure rappels are done properly, and taught me a bunch of things about rope safety. Getting back the Hind Hut was a huge relief with a big sense of accomplishment.

The Hind Hut is a lovely place to spend a couple of nights. It offers magnificent views of Assiniboine and the surrounding area. It turns out Brent is also a meal specialist. He had super tasty dehydrated meals which he had made himself! We climbed Strom and Wedgewood in our third day. We returned the same way on our fourth day, including the return helicopter flight that offered more amazing views. All in all - a highly memorable trip.

Thanks Brent & Cloud Nine!

Amazing intro to mountaineering. Vince catered the program to what we wanted to to do. I would recommend this course through Cloud 9 to anyone looking to get into the mountains. Well worth it!

This is the second time I had a group attend some lessons with cloud 9 guides. The experience was very positive and I felt that we went away with some new much needed skills. I highly recommend their services.

Justen Bruns did a fantastic job leading our group of seven on a crevasse rescue course. We appreciated how he took the extra time to sit with us at the end of the day and talk about any questions that had come up. I think it's safe to say that all the members of our group would readily choose Cloud Nine for any future trips we have in mind.

GET TRIP INSURANCE and check the negative reviews (you will find a theme!)
Like many others my friend and I choose to do the “intro to Mountaneering course” with cg9 because it offers some of the best value as it includes more skills and a fuller experience for less money than most other companies.
After a quick glance at reviews in various websites, we didn’t see any red flags so we jumped into it in June2020 ( we were their 1st group after the first pandemic lockdown).
We were on a tight budget and didn’t get trip insurance ( lesson learned).
Red flags started to appear when cg9 hadn’t sent any information up until the week that the course was taking place and we had reached out asking for it.
The course started and the actual instruction was Amazing! We were only 3 students and felt lucky to have the owner and an apprentice just for us.
Unfortunately, on the 2nd day when we were doing the ice portion on the athabasca glacier, the bus rolled over happened and our guides were the first ones on scene.
This situation obviously brought our course to a close as the guides had definitely gone through a very traumatic situation and wouldn’t be responsible to try to continue.
The vibe we got from Mike was that of understanding, kindness and integrity so when he mentioned a few potential solutions (doing the rock portion or trying to accommodate us at a later date) we felt that he really cared. He even let us stay the night at the campsite and gave us some of the food that was going to be consumed throughout the course.
Two weeks went by and we had not communication but due to the seriousness of the incident we thought is only normal. Then it was 4 weeks, I emailed twice, my friend emailed twice, and after seeing them active on Instagram I messaged them on there.
It was almost the end of the summer and I could see the owner posting long mountain conditions comments on Facebook groups and the cg9 Instagram being very active so we were becoming very frustrated.
Not knowing the legalities(another lesson learned) we wrote another email asking if it was possible to get at least some of the money back because the trust had been broken. This was the first time that the owner finally got back to any of our attempts at communicating with a simple - read the contract, we don’t have to give you the money back, but we can help you with an insurance claim.
This was the moment we realized that the kind and caring person we thought we met, was simply looking out for his business (fair enough).
Eventually after sparse communication we were relieved to be offered a replacement course on July 2021. (Faith was returned!).
Again, they did not communicate with the participants until the week off the course and to make it even worse my friend and I were informed 2 days before that our food was NOT included ( fair enough but couldn’t you let us know way before?)

Anyway now for the most hilarious part, my friend and I showed up on the second day after confirming through phone with one of the new operations manager and nobody was there. Fortunately we knew where they could be camping because of last year’s experience. We found the group and the guide told us that he wasn’t expecting us until the next morning.
There were 3 other students and within 30 mins of conversation the communication issues and lack of organization came up. We all went through the same and agreed that that was probably the last time any of us wanted to deal With cg9.
At the end my friend and I ended up eating better than the other guys and would often give them food as the guides had no salt, no coffee cups, no oil and one night asked the other 3 students to go to the store and buy bread and ham as they ran out (we could only laugh with my friend).

In all fairness Phil and Vince were amazing guides and we had a great week of learning with lots of laughs, but the lack of care and organization from the admin/logistical side is just sad.
All in all, great guides, awful business and customer care.

Response from Cloud Nine Guides, Director of Operations - Mike Trehearne My intent is to respond directly to our future clientele as some may appreciate comment from our leadership. My intent is to provide you as a potential future client, considering choosing us as a service provider, the opportunity to more broadly consider whether or not we are the right fit for you. For context: Unfortunately, during the summer of 2020 during the provision of one of our first Beginner Mountaineering Courses, and to follow a nearly 3 month total shut down of our operations due to C19, I personally initiated and subsequently responded to a significant mass casualty incident on the Athabasca Glacier. I personally initiated a response of what ultimately became more than 25 ambulances, 3 air ambulances, 2 professional mountain rescue services from two different National Park Visitor Safety branches and was joined by 5 Professional Mountain Guides who ultimately assisted. 27 people injured, 14 critically, and 3 fatalities resulted from the incident. It is a challenge for me still to describe the nature of the scene that unfolded in front of our group that day. With respect to the above review: The individual providing the above review was in our care, as a guest when the above occurred, and the incident ultimately required that the program be cancelled in its entirety. If you are considering booking with us, please be advised that you will be required to agree to our Booking Terms and Conditions, which are outlined clearly on each program page listed on our website and specifically here for your reference: Our Booking System will not accept any booking from any guest who does not check a confirmation box, acknowledging that they have read, understand and voluntarily agree to these Booking Terms and Conditions. The individual leaving this review voluntarily agreed to these terms at time of booking. Prior to booking the reviewer above was made aware it was our strong suggestion prior to his course with us that he purchase Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance, and at his discretion he elected not to. While the circumstances leading to the cancellation of his program are incredibly unfortunate, we were and are not required per the Booking Terms and Conditions he voluntarily agreed to, to provide a refund or any credit forward. This event could not have been further outside of our control. Regardless, we extended the offer to provide a modified, but complete rebooking of the program the following season for both he and his partner, at our own cost. In an effort to recognize the incredibly unfortunate events for all involved, this felt like a reasonable and appropriate step to take. It could further be noted in contrast to comments in his review, that other individuals present during the programming he has described above, have continued to rebook with us and remain valued Guests to our operation and staff. With respect to comments in the above review describing a trend in our Guest feedback. Our belief is that most reasonable people will see the tone in these select few comments (including this one), consider further that we have thousands of client days each year, and contrast them with awards such as the 2021 Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence, or the hundreds of other online reviews that in the vast majority provide exceptional feedback. I would invite yourself, or any prospective Guest to reach out directly should you wish to gain clarity on the values, or moral direction of our organization. While it's important we all consider as a team at Cloud Nine Guides, any constructive criticism with due care and attention, I remain grounded less in this instance in the content of the above review, and more firmly in the understanding that the actions of both myself, my team, and that of the other Guides on site that day, very likely played a significant role in the saving the lives of more than a dozen critically injured individuals on the Athabasca Glacier that day. For those who can envision the nature of a critical response of this scale, for those who understand PTSD and its potential life long impacts, it is unlikely that I need to explain what type of constitution of character is required to step into harm's way for the betterment of others. There is little that can more adequately describe who we, than our actions on that day. Mike Trehearne IFMGA Mountain Guide Director of Operations Cloud Nine Guides Inc.

Amazing first outdoor lead climbing experience with Mike! Very knowledgeable and inspiring. I am now feeling very confident to tackle outdoor climbing on my own. The extra gear list that they send is also really helpful to figure out exactly what to buy.

Thanks Mike!

Did an indoor/outdoor lead course for sport climbing through Calgary climbing centre. Mike, from Cloud Nine did the outdoor portion, and he did a great job! the lessons were well presented, easily understood, with lots of time to practice and get help as needed. By the end of the day I and my husband felt comfortable and safe to get back out sport climbing again. Mike was also up on the new science and info behind the sport.
as an added bonus it was going to be a hot day and Mike chose a climbing space that remained cool and comfortable all day.
Great course!

I did an outdoor lead and anchor building lesson Cloud Nine Guides in May 2021, and had a fantastic experience! Our guide Vincent was knowledgeable, and did a fantastic job of balancing the differing knowledge and experience levels of our group to ensure that everyone was able to focus on the skills they wanted to build and leave with the ability to start climbing outdoors independently. Cloud Nine Guides did an excellent job of providing appropriate materials and gear for the lesson, including learning materials, and communicated clearly both prior to the course and well as providing some helpful follow-up information. It was a great day, and I highly recommend their courses!

CLOUD NINE GUIDES (Canmore) - 2022 What to Know BEFORE You Go
