the walking on ice at Grotto Canyon experience was incredible, we had a super experience as a family activity, our team leader (guide) was so kind and friendly all the time we spent together, also allow me to say she made the most tasty and delicious hot chocolate I ever had, not even Star...ks nor Tim....ns make the hot chocolate... This hike is amazing walking on the frozen lake. It was a warmer day, and the lake was slushy in parts and very, very slippery. Wearing crampons is a MUST! The views are just beautiful & stunning and enjoyed watching the folks ice climb.

Grotto canyon was a favorite above Johnston Canyon. The experience of walking over frozen water was amazing. At the end of the walk, you are viewing yet another beautiful view of a frozen waterfall. We loved it along with our guide from Banff tours. This trip should be added to a must do, you are more down with nature

This is an excellent winter hike. The distance is not quite 4 km so an easy walk. It is however quite icy so strongly suggest the using the ice grips that you can put on your hiking boots. You need to dress warm and best to wear something wind proof with something for head and neck. There is also a... More

This is a beautiful place to visit, but if you hike through the canyon in the winter, you MUST have ice cleats/crampons, otherwise sections are impassable....no, really, the ice is so slick you *cannot* walk on it with only boots! We stopped here on our way home from Banff, and hiked as far as we could without ice cleats. It... More

Have just completed the walk to Grotto Canyon. Would be best done in the winter and after a snow fall. The snow would give a bit of grip on the ice of the frozen river. Worth the effort if not for the challenge alone. Kids fly up it. Make sure you get to the frozen waterfall at the end. Didn't... More

Grotto Canyon is best visited in the winter months. The iced over creek and frozen waterfall make beautiful backdrops. Make sure to wear proper footwear as the creek can be slushy in some sections, and very slippery! The hike was a good distance for beginners. You can take the trail further past the waterfall, although we stopped soon after. We... More

Gotta canyon has a small amount of elevation so for people who don't regularly hike it is a good one to start on. It is still a decent amount of Km's if you choose to keep going into the canyon after the water fall. There are ancient rock wall paintings on the left hand side of the canyon wall as... More

My wife and I wanted a short hike before lunch and this was it. It wasn't too busy when we arrived, but it sure was when we left! The creek bed was pretty much dry so no wet feet. Beautiful views along the way.
