Stepping inside the Mather-Walls on a hot summer's day is a joy. The first thing I notice when I step through the door is how nice and cool it is to escape the outside heat. The next thing to notice is the warm and friendly greeting from the summer student employees. They are wonderfully pleasant and eager to please. Once they bring you what you want to eat or drink, it is a lovely old house in which to sit and relax while enjoying a sandwich, a dessert treat, and/or a cup of tea.

The Mather-Walls House is a hidden gem and no visit to Kenora is complete without stopping in for inexpensive tea, treats and a tour.
This is a historic site, originally the home of the first big-time business man in Keewatin who owned the local lumber company plus the flour and saw mills. The home is a very fine example of Queen Anne Victorian architecture and is filled with furnishings of that era. There is also a ghost in residence!
As a summer resident, I frequently take camp visitors to the Mather-Walls House for tea and scones, plus our entire family looks forward to partaking in the festivities that accompany the Strawberry Tea (on Canada Day) and the End-of-the-Season Blueberry Tea (in late August). In addition to tea and treats, there is a lot of local entertainment: Scottish bagpipes, a cappella groups, etc.
Often overlooked by tourists, but totally worth a visit!

A bit of a hidden gem in Kenora, but worth the effort if you enjoy visiting period homes. This is a boss's house on the hill, overlooking the sawmill, complete with servant back-stairs, and a maid's room. Nice examples of early electrical wiring and indoor plumbing (both added after the house was build). Lots of original woodwork and wallpaper. Really enjoyed the fireplace in the library.
The building is in exceptional shape for it's age, carefully restored. Most of the furniture was used by various occupants of the home, adding to the charm.
Note: lots of stairs, so not handicapped accessible.

While the old house is neat to see it feels very cluttered and you can definitely tell that some maintenance and cleaning need to be done. The staff seemed incredibly scattered and didn't seem to know what was going on.

Very friendly tea service of delicious, lovely blueberry tea with scones and clotted cream/jam. An escorted tour by the two enthusiastic young ladies for only $4.00 for our group of 4. Gives you a sense of the family, the industry, and daily life at the turn of the century. Thank you to the volunteers of the Historical Society to make this happen.

Tried to search hours opened before we left home. Sad to say they are closed on Sundays. Really looking forward to visiting another time. Now to find something else to do in Kenora .... sure we will be successful. Note my husband saw a central air unit --- so there's a great feature!

I have never been to the " Mather-Walls House" but I heard they have a few times a year tea parties where, they serve a very good Blueberry tea. Part from the tea, the house is original from is era and it is a must see. I hope, this year, I will be able to go.
