One of few remaining fish canneries in North America, this plant offers afternoon tours three days a week affording the visitor the opportunity to follow the brining, smoking and canning of herring and kippers, and the can-making process. Well maintained equipment from the 1960s allows a close up view of the entire procedure. This is a hands-on factory where people still participate in various parts of the line. Our guide (who worked in quality control) was knowledgable and gave a thorough tour. Those who are hard of hearing may struggle to follow the dialogue in noisier areas of the plant.
