As part of our geotourism adventure, we visited the Nicola Valley Museum and Archives in Merritt, British Columbia. Although the Museum was closed due to covid, we searched for and found a nearby geocache called "Jesus Garcia". We learned that he helped form the transportation system that made the gold rush possible in this area. Before leaving the area, we admired the colorful murals on the outside wall of the Museum and Archives building.

We had not heard of this place before the visitor centre directed us here. t was worth the visit. It is accessible through a lane along side a supermarket. Entry is by donation. When you are in you will slightly eclectic but never the less interesting collection of artifices related to the local area. The staff were friendly, helpful and informative.

Couldn't believe a Museum in such an historic town is closed from 5pm Friday until 10 am Monday? HUH? Somebody needs to change the hours so weekend tourists who are the target market can go and tour the Museum Dumb Dumb Dumb

I can't say enough about how interesting and well done the displays are. I didn't expect to find much interesting since I am not from the area, but I was wrong. We stayed quite a long time reading everything about most subjects. I was most impressed for a small city museum. Clearly many people have put a lot of time and money into it. I was disappointed not to find books to buy about the history of the area, but I found a whole treasury of books at the visitor's center.

We arrived in merritt having been diverted from. Cache creek by the wildfire emergency. There didn't seem to be much to do other than the museum which we visited without much expectation.

How wrong we were. It may be small but is jammed with local information and artefacts and staffed by people who couldn't be more helpful or friendly. Our son enjoyed the kids' scavenger hunt too. We spent more than an hour exploring Merritt's past here. Worth a look if you're passing by.
