About
Kicking Horse has attracted rave reviews for its awesome vertical, deep powder and spectacular terrain mix. With an express gondola accessing over 4314 ft (1315m) of vertical, you’re bound to ski and ride an impressive feat of terrain comparable to only that of heli-skiing. Coupled with summer activities such as mountain biking, Grizzly Bear Refuge, and alpine sightseeing, this is a place where the stories are almost too tall to believe.

Shortage of staff, and a lack of commitment from certain individuals resulting in numerous visitors being frustrated with access to the gondola rides

We had a blast skiing Kicking Horse, the views were out of this world and the skiing was insane! We lucked out with fresh powder and a bluebird day so it really couldn’t have got any better!

There are so many bowls and awesome runs through the trees, this was by far my favourite hill we’ve skied out west so far.

Great mountain, horrible company! Came here on January 13th during the really cold weather. The resort was supposed to open but we waited until 13h30 for them to tell us they would not open. Guest service said they would give us a refund within 10 days. More than a month later, after many phone calls, they finally told us they would not give us a refund eventhough they did not provide the service we paid for… Horrible customer services @kickinghorsemtn. Give your money to a more respectful company!

Possibly the worst bike rental experience ever. Have been riding DH for 20yrs, and have rented at multiple ski hills.

Started day filling out liability release, (manual entry) of name, address, email, etc. put one letter of my name in wrong signature box, service rep took paperwork and crumpled it up and told me to do it again. got rental bike, checked over no brakes, had to change to wrong size to get better brakes, got bald tires instead. notified that NO changes to be made to bike. Tires at 50psi,(with rental compound) suspension compression adjustment front and rear almost closed, brake bite-point totally un-even. rebound 3/4 closed. took to parking lot to adjust and make rideable. took bike to top: no brakes. pumped up and got working enough to limp bike down. (4000 vert. ft) took back to rental shop, was told that we shouldn’t vertical load bike in gondola, and it was our own fault for air trapped in brakes…spent rest of day (2runs) with limited brakes. never again. do not rent bikes from RCR. No customer service skills, no bike repair skills, no bike set-up skills. garbage product and a terrible experience.

Sorely disappointed. Was at KHR approximately 6-7 years ago and enjoyed the skiing quite a bit. While I knew it only had limited lifts, this particular trip magnified items outside of skiing. Liftees had us sitting on chairlifts full of snow, exiting off chairs with rocks visible and not covered.
Not to mention selling 5-day old sandwiches for $20 that went bad the day prior, a lift pass scanner that continually errored on 1 of our 5 passes daily, causing us to exit the lift line and wait for 15 minutes / day until fixed (it was never "fixed".).
Took the time to write the management 2-3 weeks ago and not even a response. Won't return.

This is truly a mountain for advanced skiers. I am a solid Blue/green skier and for my level there is only one run from the top of the mountain. Now it is a great run, but can get a little boring after a few times. For the advanced black diamond skier there is unlimited terrain. People were having the time of there life. The groomed runs were great and I enjoyed skiing what I could. We ate lunch for 2 days at the Whitefish Grill which was good.
Parking is free and easy. There were no lockers but at the Day Lodge there was a small cubby area by the bathrooms on the lower level that had space.

The Via Ferrata experience at Kicking Horse is absolutely a must. Personally, I was terrified when I got up to Terminator Peak and saw the height - I told the guide, Eric, that I was going to bail - but he encouraged me to try it out by ensuring my safety and validating my body's natural fear. Reluctantly, I decided to stick it out... and I am so glad I did. The experience was unforgettable, and Eric was extremely accommodating and helpful. He kept the tour light and fun, had the best, most calming energy and presence, and simultaneously kept a watchful eye while imparting his guidance. I felt incredibly accomplished when making it to the top, and extremely grateful for Eric's encouragement along the way. Truly couldn't have done it without him - and he even took photos during the traverse! An afternoon I'll never forget (and will be talking about incessantly).

came right after labor day and nothing was open. Asked the front desk if the restaurants and shops were open and she said yes. Found them and were not open. Best part: tried to get back in and the door were locked! I had to walk around the building go back in to let my wife in. Advised the front desk person and claimed she did not know that nothing was open. There was no one there which should have told us something.

This day was our son's request for our vacation. We do lots of single track trail biking, but we don't live near mountains. He wanted to take a bike up a gondola and bike down a mountain. When we called to book the day, I also inquired about an instructor. At the advice of the woman who took our call, we booked an entire day with the instructor, not just half a day. Best decision ever! Jim was simply amazing! My husband and 2 teen sons loved him. (I chose not to bike. I enjoyed the great patio area at the bottom of the mountain.) And by having Jim bike with them all day, they improved so much! This was our 15 yr olds favorite day of our vacation. I expect we'll be back, except instead of only going for a day, we'll stay at Kicking Horse so he can bike several days.

For anyone else like us who is new to downhill mountain biking- we brought our own goggles from home. We rented the bikes and all safety gear. We could make choices about some of the gear - how much coverage, etc. If it's your first day biking down a mtn, our recommendation is to go with the most coverage, and wear clothes that won't matter if you get a little rip in them. Now, having said that, the guys were out to push their limits on the mtn. We did see people who came with their own bikes, no gear, and just a regular cycling helmet. This would not be advisable from our experience.

After driving for 90 minutes from Lake Louise, we arrived at the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. For the time of year (early July), it was relatively quiet. We booked gondola tickets the day before ($109, £67). We didn’t pay the extra for the grizzly bear refuge.

We started by looking for somewhere to grab some lunch (sandwiches, pastries etc). There is a small shop here but sadly they don’t stock these. Local restaurants in the resort provide heavy meals but this was not what we were looking for. So, we grabbed some cereal bars and biscuits from the general store and took these with us.

We had a gondola to ourselves and on the way up and to our amazement, Boo Boo, the Grizzly bear, was sitting in her water hole. First time I’d ever seen a grizzly.

Once at the top, we decided to walk the T2 Peak hiking trail. En route, we had a chipmunk pose on a rock.

We walked as far as the avalanche hut. As we arrived a marmot walked past us and started nibbling on a tree. We sat on the steps to the hut and watched him/her whilst we ate. When we got up, the marmot walked back towards us and sat right next to the steps, then wandered under the hut.

The views back down to Golden were very hazy due to smoke from fires in BC. The views on the other side were clear and visibility was good.

On our walk back to the restaurant / gondola area, there were a large amount of Checkerspot butterflies in all sizes. Before heading up we were advised that the restaurant had a private function from lunchtime. We stopped and had a coffee where we noticed that the deck was set up for a wedding.

Kicking Horse in the summer accommodates a lot of bikers and although there were other hikers, bikes were definitely in the majority. This did not put us off and we enjoyed the day and the hike. If you do plan on walking some of the trails, I recommend taking your own food and snacks.

FYI, we came here as an alternative to Lake Louise’s Summer Gondola up Whitehorn Mountain. This was due to an arson attack on staff residences which closed the resort area for a time.
