Well worth the visit.

Detailed displays from WWI to the present. Excellent models, clothing, medals, descriptors, photographs, paintings, memorabilia, personalized accounts. Items for purchase. Books to borrow with a membership. Bob is a very knowledgable volunteer. Open 10-2. Locals who served in the military are noted. Details + great models of HMCS Alberni & the German sub are on display. Well worth the visit - but so hard to realisr how many people are killed in wars.

A very well curated glimpse into the war experiences of individual people

I was lucky to have an in depth tour of this well curated small museum in Courtenay, BC. Even if military history is not exciting for you, this museum is well worth seeking out and visiting for any history lover. The displays have amazing personal effects and items, letters and stories that convey a truly intimate experiences for all people during WW1 and WW2. I liked the balanced presentations with inclusions of the axis and allies.. and the attention to details brings it to life, including many striking personal drawings and letters of soldiers and families at home.

A Superb Start On An Important Part Of Local History
May 2019 • Solo
This is a little hard to find, being down the hallway just off the main street. However, if you like military history (as I do), especially Canada's involvement in WWII, this is worth finding. Compact, but FULL of items relating to the Alberni and associated naval issues. I was surprised to find information on the Murmansk run - for free, no less. Definitely worth seeing, definitely worth supporting.
Free parking available in the area.

Despite its size, the HMCS Alberni Museum is a facinating place filled with real artifacts, detailed models, pictures, and interactive displays. I can with a group of 15 people, and although it was little crowded, we were kept interested for a solid hour. There is a good collection of books based on Canada's military history. The staff was passionate about history and very knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend this museum to a friend.

Lovely little museum - a real Gem!

Full of interesting stories, artifacts and personal experiences of World War (I & II). We were there when they were hosting the "Innocent Eyes" display, an emotive depiction of war through they eyes of children - very moving! My wife and I are both military history buffs (you don't have to be to enjoy this museum) and there is literally something for everyone here. Thank you Lew, for taking the time to share your wealth of knowledge with us, greatly appreciated. Tom & Margaret

Great little military museum with a wonderful display called "Innocent Eyes"
Aug. 2018 • Couples
A gem of a little museum in downtown Courtenay. Lots of great history tales without an emphasis on guns and battles. The temporary exhibit "Innocent Eyes" (on until Oct 13/18, giving a child's perspective of war) was worth all the reading. We quite enjoyed our time there and our chat with the curator!

GREAT SMALL MUSEUM
Jan. 2018
This little museum located in downtown Courtenay is a gem of naval and military history of Canada. But it is not about guns and battles, but rather what a war time experience was like, both overseas, and at home. Based around a memorial to the crew of HMCS ALBERNI, a corvette from the Second World War, the displays expand out to include other aspects of the RCN, the Great War, and the other branches of the military. One gets a good feeling for life during those periods of conflict, and relationships that were forged and lives forever changed. This is a museum that tells many stories. For members there is an interesting lending library and a place to sit quietly to read from the collection for visitors.

Thank you for your review of our museum. I'm glad that you enjoyed it. We do strive to focus on the lives rather than the machinery of wars. We have many special exhibits and events planned for 2018 so this should be an exciting year for us in our little corner of downtown Courtenay. We hope to have you visit again and see new displays as we rotate our artefacts and stories through out the year.
