We had heard about the doukhobors during our travels in the region and finally had the opportunity to visit the discovery centre. Grounds well maintained with good layout. Info and tickets to be obtained from the gift shop. Lots of parking. A self-guided tour with map gave a good overview. We started with the AV presentation and had a look at the different items on display. Lots of memorabilia and personal histories from the original settlers and their descendants and the reasons why they left their home country. The Tolstoy statue added some more insight. Kitchen and living quarters were very similar to other museums. We liked the banya and found some Russian books and the Cyrillic alphabet in one of the rooms. Brought back memories of when we studied Russian. Look for the salt, bread and water and discover their significance. Recommended.

I would recommend using the tour guide that they offer. Our guide was very good and knowledgeable. It was more enjoyable I think, then it would have been doing a self guided walkabout.

Learning the local history in Castlegar and this should be on your list. We’re finding that the Doukhobor culture is deeply rooted in the community and we wanted to know more about it. The Museum helped with this!

This centre provided a great overview of the Doukhobor's in the area. My kids did find it a bit boring as they are 11, 13, & 15 but they loved looking at the photos in the one building and going through the "House".

Visited this centre to briefly learn about the history of the Doukhobor community in the Kootenay. Very interesting. Visited a residence, a large hall with pictures showing the history chronologically, sewing house, barn with old farming tools, bathhouse (Banya) and strolled about the grassy outdoor with bigger farming equipments. The admission office comes with a small gift shop. A nice experience.

Small Museum where you can learn about Doukhobor life. Interesting history and was worth the time to learn about the Doukhobor's immigration to Canada.

A fascinating look at an important part of Canadian history. The Centre contains a number of buildings, some original and some recreated from other Doukhobor villages. Very comprehensive displays about their history, beliefs, and daily life. A short drive and walk nearby is the suspension bridge that the Doukhobors in the area built by hand.
Eugene in the office is super knowledgeable about his Doukhobor heritage, he really adds to the whole experience. One of the best Canadian historic sites I have ever visited, make it a destination if you're in BC.

The Doukhobor Discovery Centre will teach you many things about these beautiful, creative and hardworking people. Some things you'll learn: First is that there are two different factions which have very different perceptions of their faith. You'll learn that they have a very interesting history, some of it in turmoil and some of it striving to live every day in peace and generosity to others in need. They are a people who are close to the earth and very knowledgeable about living a traditional way of life. If you are gifted with hearing them sing their prayer songs, you will feel it to the core of being where it touches something deep and brings to life an ancient knowing within. I was recently at the Doukhobor Discovery Centre where they have beautifully archived and preserved some of their history in clean, well kept buildings with kind caretakers. "Toil and Peaceful Life" is their slogan and they live by it. The only reason for not giving 5 stars is that as I was walking around, I looked at one display, which turned out to be the clothes Mr. Verigin was killed in. In that moment I felt I was a voyeur of a terrible event and it felt very disrespectful of Mr. Verigin's memory and of him resting in peace.
