Absolute Sportfishing- Laurel Gareau - under cloudy skies and not much wind - had us fish over the Quadra Island Lighthouse. The three of us enjoyed the fishing experience again. Two of us brought aboard a wild Spring of the right size. Our third fisher caught several wild Coho and had to give them back to the sea.
This was my first time fishing in front of the Lighthouse on a rising tide. The ocean movement during the four hours—riptides—was very interesting to watch other 'travelling yachts' and barges 'fight' the riptides. The view of boats going backwards at a fairly high speed was notable.
Laurel's new fishing reels felt very good in my hands.
He changed his two motors and related electronics to Mercury over the prior season. They were a very cool ride, and they were quieter as well.
New to me: a fishing officer attended our fish cleaning process. Her purpose was to take a number of fish scales from each of our two fish as part of the federal statistic recording. She shared the multitude of information that can be gathered about the fish along the BC rivers and ocean.
I booked my 2025 July trip with Laurel.

Here’s a polished Google review based on your experience:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
We’ve been fishing with Laurel for the past couple of years, and every trip has been the best! Laurel is an outstanding guide—extremely knowledgeable, efficient, and extremely dedicated to ensuring his clients have the best possible experience. He takes excellent care of his boat and gear, making sure everything is in top shape. You can tell he truly cares about both his clients and the fishing experience. He’s passionate and honest, and does everything he can to put you on the fish. My dad and I will definitely keep coming back, we highly recommend Laurel for an unforgettable fishing trip in Campbell River! The tug is the drug!

We had the most amazing day on the water with Laurel. He was so amazing with the kids and they caught so many fish it was unbelievable. The boat was clean with lots of room for all of us. We would go again in a heartbeat. Thank you again so much!! Best fishing trip ever.

What an amazing day fishing with Absolute Sportfishing! Not only did we have fish on almost the entire time, but we also saw orca, humpack, sea lion and eagles. This trip was an absolute dream come true for my son and I. Laurel is an experienced and fun guide. Would definitely recommend.

My husband and I were booked out of Browns' Bay with Laurel's charter. It was an amazing experience!! It was the first time we ever fished with Laurel. He showed up on time and while we have lots of experience salmon fishing, he was the first guide to show us how to "set the hook" after the fish was on the line! He provided us with pointers and helped us along the way. We went out for 2 - eight hour trips, and caught 9 fish (chinook, pink, chum, and a BLUE ling cod). 8 hours went by quickly as Laurel is a very easy person to chat with and we had some good laughs!! His boat is in great condition and is very comfortable!! We are booking with him again next year and have recommended him to our friends!!

Laurel was a brilliant boatman and fisherman. Excellent guidance and assistance at every point of our day. His enthusiasm is undimmed from his years of fishing experience and there can be no better rush of adrenaline when the sound of the clutch on the reel starts to whine! A great day out with lots of fish to release as we were fishing on the 9th July before permission to keep on the 13th.

2 couples joined Captain Laurel for a great 4 hour salmon fishing trip. Laurel taught us how to work the rod and reel and we had a fabulous time on the Salish Sea. It was a beautiful day and we caught 2 lingcod too small to keep and three chinook salmon. Laurel cleaned the fish and the end of the trip and bagged them for us. We took them back to our rental for a fabulous dinner. Laurel gave us what we wanted, a great day of fishing and boating on the beautiful waters of BC. We highly recommend contacting Laurel and enjoy your day of salmon fishing. We all hope to be able to return soon for a repeat salmon fishing trip.

The sea was rough. I'm a lousy sailor yet I had a great day.
The bot was immaculate.
The skipper, Laurel was an excellent guide and we bagged some fabulous chinook salmon.
Highly recommended.

The drizzle didn’t slow us down!! Laurel met us at the Campbell River, BC dock early. (Don’t mix his company name with the one in the US). He was excited to get us to the bite. His boat is solid, comfortable, safe and powerful. The 300 HP Yamaha (next to the 9.9 for trolling) zipped us to the “Meat Market” where we seemed to be the only ones catching anything today…. 5 caught, 1 kept. He’s ethical. He has integrity. He is very knowledgeable. He cleaned our fish and encouraged us to feed the seals - awaiting our dregs. He left us wanting more! (We extended our stay to enjoy another 4 hours tomorrow…. Couldn’t help ourselves). It was soooooo worth it!
Just an awesome experience. Totally worth every minute…. Every penny. It was one of those memories you take to the grave. Thanks, Laurel.
