Yes, this excursion is not to be missed. You are dealing with highly professional people that do their utmost for you. Booking the tour is hasslefree. Upon checkin you are greeted by a very friendly staff. After some paperwork and a short wait you are suited up. You are issued a survival suit, a ski mask and a woolen hat. Then, off to the boat. A Zodiac type that seats 12. Our captain of the day was Jason. He prooved to be a really nice guy. Humorous, skilled, and with lots of knowledge about the area and he knows what he was talking about.
We set out and it wasn't for long that we saw the first whale. The animals wellbeing was certainly taken into account. Never approached the boat the whales we saw closer then 100 meters. (Which is mandatory I understood) Only one time a whale approached our boat so Jason shut off the engine leaving us with only the sound of clicking cameras.
The boat was sailed in such a way that it was comfortable for everyone. After a few hours we moored at Stewart island for lunch. It was all prepared in cooler bags and quite complete with a candybar and fruit even. Well done!
The afternoon was so lovely. The sun on our heads, seeing a few more whales, a blackbear, some 100 bald eagles and sea lions. The whole trip lasted untill 4 pm when we returned. One minor thing was that the p/a system used, was not quite loud enough in the front when sailing at higher speeds.
All in all a perfect day out. Might cost you a bit more than you were willing to spend, but do yourself a favour. You'll forget about the money whilst this experience will never leave your head.
A few practical tips: (bases on clear, sunny, warm weather)
Just a t-shirt and shorts under your suit are enough. The woolen hat we didn't use of course.
Ballcaps will blow off of your head because of the speed the boat at times sails at.
Bring sunglasses that will stay on your head in the wind. The ski mask can be used instead.
Up front in the boat you catch a lot more wind.
Don't worry about your stuff getting wet. It won't. Unless you drop it overboard ;-) .
Don't bring water etc. There's water on board as is a toilet.
And now, go enjoy!
