Curtis Smith was a great guide and super helpful in teaching my son some of the ins and outs of Chinook fishing. We had a great fishing experience with lots of fishing action, and easily limited out with a couple of quite large chinook. We brought home a couple of beauties and, thanks to Curtis' great in-depth knowledge, brought home a boat load of memories and new information.
It certainly added to the overall experience when Curtis took us on a bit of a tour on our run out to the fishing grounds so that we could watch the humpback whales for a while. (One even breached on cue, coming almost entirely out of the water while back lit by the rising sun shining between two distant mountain peaks!).

What an experience! Curtis is the real deal. We went heli-fishing in a remote river in the mountains and caught some trout, had the chance to see some mountain goats and we had some time up on top of the mountains in the snow too! The scenery was incredible. We had never tried fly fishing previously, Curtis was an amazing coach and we are all now “hooked” on fly fishing. Now as if that wasn’t enough, we then went Ocean fishing for Salmon a few days later. Following the helicopter day is tough for a boat to compete with? Nope, not with Curtis. It was awesome! We ended up dropping traps for Prawns on the way out to the fishing ground. Then we had some fun action with some smaller fish, followed by eight big Salmon. We even had time to stop and pick our own Oysters for lunch! Then on the way back we picked up our Prawn traps and had a nice heap for dinner. The scenery from the boat in the Campbell River area is absolutely unbelievable. I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking to experience a fun & safe day of fishing and exploring with a fun guide that is full of knowledge and local insight. We even received an email full of amazing pictures as a follow up!

This was by far the best salmon fishing experience we’ve had.
Although we fell into the “catch and release” dates; it made the experience that much better. We caught a minimum of 30+ Salmon each day we were there. Curtis was a riot, he had us on our game and took pictures And videos the whole time.
We didn’t go home empty handed; we took home a 40lb halibut and 4 Ling cods in the 2 days we spent with him.
On top of that; we watched the whales breach, we laughed and made memories = PRICELESS
I highly recommend booking 🙌🏼🎣

We had an awesome day salmon fishing. Curtis, our very knowledgeable skipper wasted no time in getting us hooked into Chinooks. In our first hour he couldn't get a second line in the water as we always had fish on! The rest of the morning was very productive with a bonus of seeing killer whales pass by. During these trying times Curtis was also well prepared with lots of hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes and masks onboard. Looking forward to our next fishing adventure with him. Highly recommend Curtis to anyone who wants a great fishing experience.

Thank you guys, it was a pleasure hosting you for some fun fishing while we navigate this new normal of Covid19. I appreciate your patience as we learn how to interact together on the boat in the coming weeks. Safety is paramount to our operations so virus prevention is just added to the new list of our safety protocols. This fishing was amazing for sure and glad you got to see that, looking forward to your next visit!

This whole adventure started with a great ride out past Cortes Island so we could drop some Prawn traps at our request. After that we started fishing for King Salmon and ended up with one the biggest catches Curtis has seen this winter. I ended up with 2 big keepers and enjoyed probably the best salmon dinner I've ever had. He also took us to gather wild beach oysters and had some homemade mignonette and hot sauce. He was well prepared and went above and beyond to make our experience top notch. He put us in contact with a lady who owns wild tide seafood and she portioned, vacuum sealed and shipped out catch home all hands free for us. I've done fishing charters all around the world and hands down Curtis is the best! I can't wait to get back here and do it again. Anyone looking to do a charter on Vancouver Island needs to book with Costal Wilderness Adventures.

From the onset, Curtis provides the most superb professional service. It would be quite understandable if Curtis had despaired over the number of my queries and emails prior to booking and yet, he always answered even the slightest concern with alacrity and kindness.
The two days booked (one river fishing and one sea fishing) were exceptional - in both guides and locations.
Justin provided my husband with a day of absolutely fantastic salmon river fishing taking him "off the beaten track" to enjoy salmon flyfishing at it's finest.
I joined my husband for the day sea fishing and both the day and Ben, our guide, could not have been surpassed. As well as being the consumate professional in his knowledge and guiding skills, Ben was also considerate, helpful and wonderful company.
He really gave us "the dream day" and one never to be forgotten.
I understand that fishing days can be considered an expensive treat - all I would say is, "Don't hesitate to book this company"; you will be provided with the very best in terms of experienced professional guides who really care that you have the most fabulous time!

We had the most amazing trip both Curtis and Gene were AMAZING!! We needed 2 boats to accommodate all of us, both guides did such a great job of working together and keeping all of us in the same loop. We may have been on different boats but seemed like the experiences happened for all of us together.
I thought it was gonna break my heart to have to choose between my 2 boys but we couldn’t all be on the same boat. At days end seeing the expressions and pictures that Curtis had taken made it as though I was able to be in both places.
I strongly believe that this is only the first of many family trips!! ❤️❤️
We did a daily family journal and everyone’s favourites included the guides and of course the fish. These men did everything shy of jumping into talk the fish directly to our lines.
Not a doubt in my mind the years of experience are the reason we were able to tag out daily.

So so kind Kim! Your family was the best and really just loved the experience on the whole with a super amazing attitude the whole time which just makes it easy for myself and my guides to give you that fun experience! Everything seems to work out perfect for those that are open to enjoying it all and taking it as it comes. Really looking forward to this as an annual event! See you next year!

I recently grilled a couple Chinook fillets and realized I still needed to post my review! I booked Coastal Wilderness Adventures to celebrate my Partner’s birthday in June. I connected with Curtis and appreciated his upfront approach with respect to regulation - I found this to be quite refreshing as I had connected with a couple other potential charterers that made no mention of where/when you could keep your catch.
Day of, we met Curtis bright and early at the marina and set off for about 45 mins to the designated zone. It was absolutely beautiful in the Desolation Sound area, very calm and peaceful. It is also true that the early bird catches the worm as we had many bites between the two of us and each took home one Chinook about 75cm in length. I’ve never fished before and was a bit nervous about the eight hour day but it flew by between bites, reeling and of course an excellent birthday picnic lunch. Highly recommend, we came up from Victoria and wanted to support local during these COVID times.

Never a dull moment with Curtis! I am a repeat client of many years, and going salmon fishing with Coastal Wilderness Adventures is what I look forward to every summer! Curtis continues to thrive as a knowledgeable and energetic guide despite the curveballs the pandemic threw at us this season, and he allows his clients to feel comfortable even with all the new guidelines in place.
Curtis continues to navigate us to where the salmon action is, and we were continuously reeling in JUMBO fish all day.... made a few other boats on the water jealous I think 😉
10/10 as always!! Fishing with Curtis has become a tradition!

I booked one and a half days private salmon fishing charter in Campbell River earlier in the year from my home in Brisbane, Australia. Curtis was very prompt and helpful to respond to my many questions via email . My fishing days were with expert guide Ben and I caught my bag limit of salmon both days and released the rest. Bens expert guidance was invaluable and his boat and fishing gear were impeccable. My wife came with us for the half day trip and thoroughly enjoyed the experience too. Highly recommended.
