Please checkout what is happening before you go. It can be hit or miss, depending on what is going on at the centre.

The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts is located in Deer Lake Park between the Burnaby Art Gallery and the Burnaby Village Museum. It is a lovely open architectural design set in a wonderfully serene location overlooking Deer Lake.

We enjoyed the art and exhibits located throughout the building, particularly some of the children's art located in the little Encores Café on the ground level. It is very low key, and you don't need to buy anything to wander around and enjoy the art. I would allot about 30 minutes to see the art and exhibits... or years to take some of the wonderful classes. Add time if you want to grab a bite to eat.

The listings of art activities and classes for all ages was quite impressive, as was the list of upcoming events. I wish I could stay and see many of them. Honestly, I don't think their website is the best representation of what is available there, but not a bad place to start.

The part of this multi-level building that faces the lake is a wonderful location for sitting and enjoying the view and weather on a nice day. It overlooks an open expanse of grass and trees with some children's playground structures for their exploration. It is a mini-escape from the city that would be perfect for reading (or writing) a good book.

If you just discovered that the Burnaby Village Museum is closed during the winter, or are on your way to the Burnaby Art Gallery.... stop by the Burnaby Arts Council's Deer Lake Gallery and the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.

If you are local, I would definitely check out the art and performance classes for children and adults, as well as the list of upcoming events. This looks like a Burnaby gem!

We were there for the Tonye Aganaba concert. The seating was great and it was a real treat for them to have so much room to both get ready and perform. Well thought out space.

This was our second time seeing Onegin, and we found that we got a whole lot more out of seeing the play a second time. An excellent production. This was our first visit to the Shadbolt Centre in Burnaby. It is a beautiful, spacious Centre for the Arts in a lovely setting. We spent time walking about and learned much about the many features and activities that take place here. This is definitely a jewel for the arts community of Burnaby.

It is an inspiring place for those who want to sign up for visual arts classes, pottery or music and dance classes. Just meet a friend for lunch and then enjoy a nature filled walk around the lake or the Ceperley gardens. The Burnaby art gallery is a 5 minute walk away and the heritage village also. The Shadbolt theatre offers many interesting venues for theatre and they are affordable with parking being free and accessible.

This is a lovely open, airy building that makes a perfect coffee stop if you’ve been walking around Deer Lake Park, visiting the Burnaby Art Gallery (a very short walk to the centre) or going to the Burnaby Village Museum (across the street). There’s a nice little coffee bar just inside the entrance that serves drinks, baked items and sandwiches at very reasonable prices. Tables and chairs are adjacent, or you can head to the other end of the building where there’s a seating area overlooking the park. Much of the art in the central portion is by Jack Shadbolt, a painter who spent the latter part of his life in Burnaby. Other areas of the building have rotating exhibitions. There are two theatres in the centre, but it seems to be primarily a teaching facility, with studios for dance, music and art. Lucky Burnaby! Wish there was something similar where I live.

The exhibits change quite often, so it's always a treat to visit this place. We really appreciate the effort the Centre places on exhibiting local art work. The building is gorgeous too!
