I never knew the history of the park but was fascinated by reading it, and be able to visit it today, going back in time over 100 years to see what the rough life was like here. One can still imagine the town with hundreds of mill workers from overseas, contributing to the early BC economy. It’s worth coming to the beach as well or to take an easy walk by the water.

The park is dedicated to the former mayor of Burnaby and it seems it was his favourite walking area. It is a lovely park with plenty of options. You can have a picnic or a barbecue, or go fishing or swimming or kayaking. It is very popular with dog owners as this is an off-leash park and dogs can be seen running around on the grass or darting into the water. There is a very nice walking trail which takes around the waterfront. All in all, a great place to spend morning or afternoon or evening depending on your preference

We went as soon as the restriction was lifted. Being home for almost 3 months was necessary for everyone's safety.
It was a rainy day, so we had to pack up right away. Parking is far from where the beach is, walking was a challenge.
Taking photos and spending timw with my family and friends were my main reasons why this was an enjoyable experience. Rain or shine.

Used to love this place for the off leash dog park. Now it's over run with people picnicking, barbecuing, and crabbing. Why anyone would want to sit on dog poop grass while fishing for crab in the dog pee water is beyond me. There's a whole east side of the park for people, but some are so inconsiderate and seem to not care that although they have a choice where they want to socialize, the dogs ONLY have this area. But then again, tacky people do tacky things I suppose. Just today, several members of a large family gathering were seen creeping into the bushes to "do their business" when there was a porta potty less than 10 feet away. 🤷🏻♀️ who's the "animal" now? Disgusting.

Off leash trail needs some gravel in the drainage canals, most of the time its a big mud pit along side of the walk and if you're on the other side by the ocean the dog is constantly trying to get at raw chicken scraps and crab guts by the exploding population of crabbers that are always down there now. Hard to keep off leash dogs away from raw chicken used in their crabbing pots along the shore. I don't know why they are allowed in the off leash area since its so small. Why not fish further down the park where off leash dogs not allowed?

Great location by water for walking on level, wide paths. Easy to keep distanced. Nice views of Indian Arm, Deep Cove, and passing boats, paddle boards, ships.

Out to go for a walk to Barnet Marine Park. A great place for a family picnic. Off leash dog area, and an area to swim in the summer. Love to see the ships going up and down the inlet. Handicapped parking near the park lots of parking in designated areas at the entrance. Lots of shady areas for summer days.

Barnet Marine Park is a wonderful place to picnic, swim, stroll and explore. Admission is free, parking is ample, there are clean washrooms and change areas and this is a place where memories are made. The beach although not supervised, is clean, sandy, gradual and roped off for the safety of bathers. While sitting on the beach or bathing you will often see tugs, ocean going vessels and pleasure boats go back and forth on the inlet a few hundred meters away.
Take the time to read the signs that are in the park that will tell you about the amazing history of the location, one of the largest lumber mills in the British Empire the diverse population who lived here in the past and even some intrigue surrounding the building of submarines for Russia in World War 1 just down the beach.

The park sign is not easy to spot, when you are on Barnet Hwy, there is a sign “Barnet Marine Park and Takeda Drive” hanging on the traffic light post. That is the turn off. There are a few wheelchair accessible parking spots inside the park (that gate close at 9pm) and 2 parking lots out on the road (that gate close at 10pm) . After parking your car, you need to walk a very short distance and cross the railway track. This romantic park will be in front of you. When we were there, we noticed some remains of the old logging community of Barnet still leaving a mark there. The park has all the basic facilities that you need like picnic tables, a nice sandy beach, outdoor shower, washroom and change area and a fishing pier. On the day when we were there, a few groups of people were catching crabs. There is a size restriction for keeping them. The park also has a walking trail. Last week we went there in the evening for a stroll and enjoyed the spectacular sun set. Next time we will bring the canoe there. We are so blessed to live close by.

What time will the gate open on Sunday? is it a first come first serve base for the picnic tables? We are thinking to have 20 plus people gather there for a picnic.
Written July 6, 2023
To the best of my knowledge, there is no reservation system at the park and it is on a first come first serve basis. But I don't think there is a single table that can accommodate 20 people

Do the picnic areas offer electricity and water hookups? Looking to reserve for a birthday party and would like to have a bouncy castle/water slide for the kids.

May I suggest you check with Parks and Rec Dept at the city re permits, etc.

What time do the gates for the parking lot close? Thinking of having a bbq there around 5pm.
Written May 24, 2018
Gates will be open from dusk to dawn and no worries you can bbq there lots of picnic tables through out the park

It is a great spot! There are dragon boats and rowing teams that go out all the time. You can cross the Inlet and go over to Belcarra area which also has nice beaches to pull up on. The lower area has parking for handicapped only, but spots for drop off for your boat and then park at either end on the road out. Parking is limited so the summer time is super busy. More parking across Barnet Hwy. Have fun!

From pictures I see sand and rocks so is there a Sandy side and a rocky side? Are there other attractions and playgrounds near by?
Written July 18, 2015
Yes, Cindy, you are right. In the middle, closer to pier, there are sandy areas. To the sides it's mostly rocky/muddy.
You could find remains of old saw mill, but with some imagination it could be an old castle :-). Playgrounds for sure
