This is a lovely park located in North Burnaby. You can go for long walks or choose to enjoy great water views. The trails are easy and have various loops that allow you to choose how much you want to walk on a given day. They can be bit narrow in spots, abut on the positive side, most trails are well shaded - which can be a very important factor on a hot day. To cool-down, you canstroll to the waterfront, where you will be able to see a host of birds and enjoy the large lake in the middle of the city.

I always enjoy this two-pronged playground, as I can start with a hardy walk, and end with some great water views.
The trails are well packed and easy on the ankles, and have various "loops", thus permitting journeys of various lengths. However, they are quite narrow in spots, and can be uneven. On the positive side, there are no bikes permitted, and most trails are well shaded - an important attribute on a hot sunny day.
For a cool-down period, consider a stroll to the waterfront, where you can marvel at the birds and enjoy the serenity of this large lake in the middle of the city.
Adequate parking nearby, but I always park on the north side of the CN main line.

I usually come down here in the summer heat, and escape the direct sunlight under the tree-covered trails. But, getting a bit restless after a few weeks of cold weather, thought I'd come check out what it's like in the winter. I was quite surprised to see quite a few birdwatchers, and as many birds as I see in summer. Canada Geese, ducks, pigeons, and a few smaller birds my untrained eye couldn't identify. So, if you like this sort of thing, as I do, c'mon down, and remember it is free!
A fair bit of parking on both sides of the tracks. There was a bit of snow here and there on the trails, so maybe a few weeks too early for a serious hike.
Paper trail maps available at the office; washrooms too.

I was trying to ride my bike with my 3yr old daughter along the Burnaby Greenway but when I got to Burnaby Lake we were confronted with countless "no cycling" signs. We detoured along the bike lane to the north of the park. Needless to say I wasn't impressed how the traffic was whizzing by between 60 to 80km/h. I didn't find this bike lane particularly green as it goes along a industrial zone. Not the best route for a family to take with young children. They should open up at least one of the numerous trails so cyclists have one path through the park.

As an avid cyclist I am disappointed that there have been no options for bicycles. Cyclists are told to bypass the entire park via an industrial thoroughfare. The route is touted as family friendly but is death defying even for adults. No scenic paths. No breath of nature. Just white knuckle riding and truck fumes. I would give Burnaby Lake park a 0 if I could.

We come here quite often. You don't have to drive out of the city to be among nature. You can hear the traffic in the distance but it isn't that bad. Listening to the birds and watching the ducks/geese is always fun. Perfect place to go for a quick walk or a long one any time of year.

I tried to get some movement on the issue from Burnaby Parks and Rec but they won't budge and it's a great pity. This is one of the finest trails in Burnaby itself and in the lower mainland as a whole. You can ride from Trout Lake and follow the Central Valley trail all the way to the western end of the lake (right up to the rowing pavilion in fact) but then you're faced with "no biking" signs all over the trail entrances ,thus denying the most pleasurable part of the whole experience to cycling enthusiasts. It's really beautiful on the inside trails and maybe worth just walking your bike along them a ways to take in some of the views.
Yes, the trail can be narrow in parts but it's like that in Central Park and there doesn't seem to be too many problems with mixed use there.
You can, if you want, take the freeway trail to the south and this takes you right along to the Horse Paddock but it's a rocky gravel path and the noise of the freeway spoils your enjoyment.
To anyone who reads this I urge you to put pressure on the Bby Parks and Rec to open it up. If they do there will be a continuous trail to the Brunette River at the other end and eventually, I'm sure, they'll link it up with a Fraser waterfront trail that will take you to the River Market.
Right at the moment you have to negotiate some horrible traffic through Old New West and The Pen. grounds to make it to that same market.
From there there is already a bike trail which follows the Skytrain from New West right back to Trout Lake , making for one of the best traffic free rides you'll find in the area.
Enjoy

We had a nice time watching the birds, ducks and geese by the lake. Then we headed out for one of many walking trails near the lake. Very quiet and peaceful during the week.

There’s a 10-kilometre loop trail around the lake that must have some good views, but we weren’t able to find the interesting sections. We started off at the parking lot near the rowing pavilion. A park maintenance worker could tell us nothing about the trails — he said he’d never walked any of them — so we asked a woman walking her dog which trails would be scenic. Answer: none in that area. The trails on either side of the parking lot, she told us, followed the lake but gave no views because of the trees. (These are not tall, spaced out trees like in Robert Burnaby Park; they’re small, scrubby and dense.) Back into the car, we headed over to the parking lot near the Copeland sports centre, where we found a sign to the trailhead and a map. While it showed the overall trail system, there was no information about distances or terrain. We opted for the trail that borders the sports field. There were some initial glimpses of Still Creek and the lake, but after that, nothing. We came to a junction with zero information about where any of the trails led, so we simply chose one at random. After a rather dull trudge on a muddy path through trees, we ended up at the rowing pavilion parking lot that we’d come upon earlier. Given the size of the lake and the fact that it’s a wildlife sanctuary, I’m sure there are rewarding sections to walk, but the area we tried offered little unless you’re looking for a place to jog or exercise the dog. Some signage would be a big plus. It’s not unreasonable to expect a little information about the length of each trail section and what it connects to.

Barnet is a fairly nice beach on the inlet approaching Port Moody. Great views and lots of grassy areas. Safe to swim...most of the time. However, parking and traffic is some of the worst I have ever seen. Parking is about a half kilometer away but drop off and pick up is allowed at the beach. Always chaos at peak times. Finally, the geese have thoroughly polluted every inch or so it seems.
