About
Deep in the Canadian Badlands, a location famous for its prehistoric attractions, lies a hidden valley where the events of a not-so-distant past echo, a place where ancient Israel is reborn and you can experience, "the greatest story ever told." The 14,000 who come each July are moved to laughter and tears by the dramatic portrayal of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

A must see! The cast does a wonderful job at presenting the life of Christ with his disciples. A beautiful setting. Well run, clean, the food was good.

Most everyone knows about the Calgary Stampede at this time of year, but very few know that if you go 2 hours NE of Calgary into the Badlands, this annual gem is performed. I've seen the historic Oberammergau Passion play and while the Badlands play can't compete with the amazing backstory, history and commitment of the one in Germany, I feel the one in Canada is actually better in terms of setting, and a more full-bodied story.

This only takes place for 3 weekends a year in July. It goes rain or shine so be prepared for unpredictable weather...which sometimes adds to the experience for me.

I attended the Badlands Passion Play for the first time in 2015 and was so impressed with that production; it had a long lasting affect on me. I was so excited to return again this year with a couple of friends. But I am sad to say that I was extremely dissappointed that the play is now a musical. To me, I feel that the musical performance did not evoke the deep emotional connection to the story of Jesus as did the excellent acted play I saw in 2015. With a musical the focus seems to be on the singing which to me does not compare to a well acted performance. The ressurection of Jesus was underwhelming, it was not portrayed as a happy & joyous occasion. Also it seemed to me that there was too much focus on Simon Peter, it felt at times like he was the main character, not Jesus. The play was a bit too long and at times felt tedious.
There is a tremedous amount of hard work that goes into creating this performance, so kudos to all involved in this production. I did enjoy some aspects of this play and the beautiful setting, I just prefer the non-musical version more.

The setting is amazing and all seats have a great view but you need to take a cushion. The volunteer staff are to be commended from parking to the amphitheater seating and performers. Sound quality was good. When the angels suddenly appeared atop the surrounding hills it brought tears to my eyes, so moving!

This play was a much higher caliber event than I expected. One of the best plays I have ever attended. Highly recommend.

Excellent production, amazing stage, encorporating the landscape. World class! We just went down for the day from Edmonton, worth the drive - but next time, I might want to stay and see more of the area.

We went on the last evening of the showing. Lots of audience coming in but they managed the parking well with lots of attendants.
The scenery is beautiful, with the typical badlands type of mounded hills around the bowl. Then the building for the set is really impressive. Then there are over a hundred people doing different roles. Even pretending to be fishermen, market people etc before the play starts. The costumes look authentic as far as we can see from the audience. You don't need to be at the front for a good view either. There is even a horse drawn chariot, sheep etc on stage at various parts.
The whole play is actually performed as a musical. There are some good singers, some are so-so if you compare to a mainstream $80 show, but remember these are volunteers. All in all it is very impressive. The acting is good. Though a serious show there are a few humorous bits in the first half. I did find that a few parts, particularly in the first half, with multiple people talking/singing at the same time, were a bit chaotic and tricky to follow the words. Also they cram a lot of story into a single play, starting before Jesus is born. But a good job, and the execution scene is handled very well. Interesting that most of the apostles are not really represented as particularly religious people for the most part.
I wish I had known to take a cushion. The wooden seats are solid, but can get you rather fidgety with a three hour show.
Definitely a spectacle!

We had our children (15,13,11 and 9) and they all loved the play. We attend church regularly so they understood the message. The crucifixion scene was quite moving. Thanks to everyone involved in this production. Your dedication is admirable and your attention to detail is stunning!

Excellent venue and well worth the time trip down to see. We combined this with 3 days of sight seeing and had a great time. We were section H top row. Good visibility and could hear well. Need time we may try to be in section G. Good acting and story. The ending was very well done.

I’d always been intrigued by the German production that happens every ten years but I cannot imagine that being a better experience than this Alberta offering. The amphitheater setting is spectacular and the production should not be missed. At least once in a lifetime everyone who has ever heard of Jesus Christ should see this play.
