Templar castle located on an islet. I chose to visit it because I hoped not to find confusion and tourists everywhere and so it was. The ticket costs €4 including motor boat transport; once we reached the islet they told us that we had to finish the visit within 40 minutes and that they would come back to pick us up. We were only 4 people on the boat, we visited the castle and - apart from our voices - the only other sounds were the birds singing and the cicadas chirping, because there are no staff on the island anyway. Magnificent!

Very unique place. What you need is - cash (4€/p), otherwise, you might be quite upset. The fortress is located on a small island, where you'll go by boat. The castle is surrounded by Opuntia Succulent grow, which is really cool. I can imagine, that when Tejo river was deeper, the building looked even more impressive.

Arrived in the morning we did not queue to board the boat that ferried us to the castle (the only way to get there) paying only € 4 return and castle.
The visit is in complete autonomy within the walls of the castle where you can read inside its history and legends
If you are in the area visit to do

One of the most charming castles in Portugal, not only for its good conservation, but also for the added bonus of having to reach it by boat (as it is located on an island in the middle of the Tagus River, from where it was a good defense). The castle was rebuilt in 1171 by order of the Templar master. After or before the visit, you can have a great meal at Ribeirinho restaurant, in the nearby town of Vila Nova da barquinha, where you belong.

Beautiful walk, a return to the Templar past. The castle is simple and very beautiful, it has a rich presentation of the most important places at each point. The visit is well-guided to follow. It lasts around 30 minutes, well enjoyed. We chose to leave the Ribeira pier as access by boat was closer and faster when I researched. Tickets are sold on the boat itself. Upon arrival at the castle, we will inform you how long the boat will return to pick us up. If you're in Tomar, it's really worth taking a trip here. The castle has practically been the same since its construction, giving us the opportunity to see and walk around a medieval Templar castle.

Booked in online with Filipe bento months before who made it easy for us. Good bloke. Great fort not mischief in it but a great example of a untouched 12th century battlement. Good information boards inside. We arrived this morning at the prior and paulo the boat driver took us across and gave us its history. The weather was crap but he persisted and tried to keep us dry. I’ve seen a few in England France Spain and Italy but this is my favourite as it’s original, early, built on an island and built for battle. Thanks Filipe and Paulo

Fantastic Medieval Castle, in great condition. My teens (and us!) really liked this one: you need to get on a small boat to get to the 'island' (barely) that it is on, so that part is fun (and provides some great photo ops. Then, the castle itself is in great condition, and offers access to the ramparts and tower. Plenty of places to climb, so ideal for a family with active teens. (No handrails, so if you're the worry-wart type then plan to be more careful)

A well preserved Templar Castle set upon the small island. It is a small castle but open for exploration. If you like history it is a wonderful experience. Great views of the river. Highly recommended.

Built in the 12th century, Almourol is one of the most amazing castles in Portugal.
Try to get the boat trip from Tancos and approach the castle from the south. It looks something out-of-this-world...powerful, invincible.
It is quite small inside, but it is definitely worth a visit.
SPECIAL NOTE: the castle has just closed for restoration and (hopefully) improvement works and it will remain closed for visitis for at least one year, so you will only be able to visit inside as from summer 2014.

So much potential and so little investment in this breathtaking historical castle made leave this site with mixed feelings.
The castle who lies in a tiny island in the River Tagus is stunning, the view is breathtaking and full of history (Medieval and Templars). I really don't understand why there's not a better plan to explore the potential there. Tickets are really cheap and include a both ways boat ride to the castle but the only information given is a small sign which is far away from the castle in the parking, close to the only cafe close-by.
The boat ride doesn't include help for people with disabilities or mobility difficulties at all. I was shocked to see that the captain is not nice or friendly or helpful at all when watching people struggling to get in the boat. Something that wouldn't happen in the UK for example! I consider this a lack of respect for other human beings who happened to be customers.
We didn't let this ruin our experience but I have to mention this to other travelers so they can know what to expect and hope the organization behind this heritage site changes this as well.
The castle itself is very well preserved and is beautiful but the lack of information around is a shame. I advice all those who intend to visit it to get some information before going as we did.
there are some parts of the castle that are not safe to go but there's no ways to prevent people to climb all those parts. If you decide to do it is at your own risk so think twice before exploring it.
The castle is not suitable for disabled people not only because of the boat with no technical or human conditions for it but also because the paths are irregular, with no special infra-structures suitable for wheelchairs. There's also lots of stairs along the way. Focusing on the boat again, there were no life jackets available nor safety instructions whatsoever. Something that should be changed quickly.
If you wish to eat or go to the toilet do it before going to the castle as there are no such facilities there. There's a cafe close-by, at the parking that you can use for it.
Only two people take care of this place during the day as far as we notice it (the captain and the admissions member of staff who is at the castle to check the tickets of all those who came by boat and to charge the tickets to all those who arrive in their own boats. This also means that there's a lunch break for them between 1pm and 2h30pm and during that time people can not visit the castle. Beware the time before going.
Again, a great place, of great importance in our history, full of potential that should be better explored, in a more interesting way for customers and history fans.
Although all the buts we had a good experience and a great time!

If we are taking the train from Lisbon for a day trip are taxi or Uber available to get to this castle?

Hello, you can take the train from Lisbon - Entroncamento and from Entroncamento - Almourol.
The best suggestion is to go from Lisbon - Entroncamento and take a cab to Almourol (5 minute drive).
Thank you

Obrigado

Yes. I cant see why not. The interior is small and I seem to remember a dog water bowl at the gate. It would be a great place to take a dog. views are great as well!

Conhecendo muito bem a regiĂŁo venho esclarecer:
- NĂŁo há transporte pĂşblico compatĂvel com a localização do castelo. O comboio nĂŁo Ă© solução porque a estação de Almourol foi desativada;
- Saindo de Tomar são 30 Km, o que para fazer a pé é de doidos;
