We stayed here one night on a return trip between Tobermory and Winnipeg. We booked site 39, which was quite private (and extra-private having no one at the two sites across the road). Stairs from the site led down to a short trail leading to the rock-lined lake and a lakeside trail. Lake access, directly from this site, required a bit or rock-hopping, but had some nice boulders on which to sit and relax right at the lake. (Living in a beach town ourselves, we enjoy the option of having a rock-shore lake, although this campground also has a beach area). Noticed some leeches swimming amongst the greenery and rocks at the lake’s edge, so swimming wasn’t very inviting right here. A couple of sites back on the loop had less rocky, weedy lake access, that did look more inviting for swimming for those who didn’t feel like heading to the beach. (seemed to be somewhere between sites 33 and 26) This campground has a number of seasonal sites booked through to September. Some of those “residents” began playing very loud Led Zeppelin music around 11 p.m. It was eventually turned down after several songs, possibly at the request or park staff, but as we were very tired from our travels, and planning an early morning, we found that behaviour disappointingly disrespectful (despite our general enjoyment of Zeppelin!), and unfortunately this left us with a more negative feeling about the park than we otherwise would have had. Having only stayed 1 night, we can’t say whether this is a common occurrence.

It is a bit of a drive off the highway which keeps the park from getting too busy. There really are some big sandbars you can walk out on , the beach had lots of shells also which kept the kids happy. We didnt see many others which was kind of nice, we had the whole beach to ourselves

Stayed here for 2 days during the week, gatehouse staff are very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful which made checking in easy and quick. The lady at check in explained the campground and showed all of the amenities and their locations around the park. The main attraction of the park is the lake, aptly named Sandbar Lake because of its sandbar and very gentle increase in depth from the shore. The lake is relatively warm and has a beautiful soft sand beach. Great sunsets on the other side of the lake from the beach which make for a great view in the evening. Campsites are well kept and offer great privacy, many sites also have electricity. There are pit toilets with buildings located around the campground, as well as two "comfort" stations with showers and bathrooms. There is a dumping station on the way out of the campground, as well as a potable water filling station. The park is located in a handy spot, 11km north of Ignace on Highway 599 just off Highway 17. Nice to be close to Ignace in case you forget something, you aren't far from a replacement. The park also offers canoe, kayak, and motor boat rentals with free life jackets. All in all this is a great Provincial Park, I would definitely return and would recommend it as well.

We have tried a variety of campgrounds in Northwestern Ontario, yet none like this.

Blue Lake, Aaron Park, Rushing River... all too crowded and although ok... are just ok.

The beach... only place I've seen like this is Mexico... it's endless and the sand so soft. The park... hardly anyone around, peace and quiet and no loud disruptive neighbours. The best though... the staff are awesome to deal with and make you feel at home.

Truly a gem in Northwestern Ontario and if you like Blue Lake or the others mentioned, you seriously have no idea what you are missing out on until you go here for a weekend.

28 days 8 Ontario Provincial Parks
2+2 2 dogs 2 humans almost 4000 km. Gas costs $1 every 2 km hauling this year

This is a park I could have skipped of the 8 we visited this was the most challenging.

We weren't advised all the comfort stations were closed and everything flooded. No potable water boil water advisory.

Black fly were the worst we have ever seen like walking in a hazy cloud and the poor dogs covered in them.

Not dog friendly at all, nowhere for them. We snuck them to the waters edge to paddle when no one was around. All the trails were unfinished or muddy and flooded felt so sorry keeping them indoors because of the black fly. I tried a trail and fell flat on my back, wet leaves over mud don't advise it

Partiers left and right loud music someone brought their electric guitar. Noisy and then some, no peaceful time even into the late hours.

This was the only time we considered moving on earlier than planned, but our 28 days all planned out like dominoes.
Never plan on going here again.

I grew up in Ignace and Sandbar was one of the places people would go for special events. School camping trips, beach days, church picnics, I've experienced them all at Sandbar.

Honestly, the thing that will stand out most about Sandbar are the beaches. They weren't kidding when they named this park Sandbar; the sand makes this fresh water lake feel more like an ocean. Not too mention how clear the water is and how gradual it changes depth. Great for smaller children.

The park as well is a lot of fun and features a number of trails. The grassy areas are also large enough to accommodate a variety of games like soccer or throwing a Frisbee.

Despite the fact I have to give a date for my visit, I actually haven't been to Sandbar in a while (probably nearly 8 years) but summer is the ideal time to be there. Of course it's closed during the winter so you would be unable to visit then.

This is our favorite campground and we try to come here every year. Camp sites are nicely treed and private. Water is beautiful blue and shallow so great for kids. Washrooms are very clean. There is also very nice hiking paths. FYI this campground only has water/electric, there is a dump site available.

My partner and I stopped at Sandbar Lake Provincial Park for a break on a cross Canada trip. It's about 10km north of Ignace, Ontario. We found a beautiful sandy beach and a crystal clear lake. Courteous park staff were out and about maintaining the grounds and directed us to a lovely trail along the beach where we were able to play fetch with our pooch in the lake. I would definitely recommend this park to anyone looking to stretch their legs and spend some time in nature.
