Park is well managed, garbage is emptied and washrooms are cleaned regularly. Trails are well marked and maintained. Beach is a mix of sand and shingle, water is cool so not great for swimming. All the roads are paved and sites have enough spacing for privacy.

Large trees surround many of the campsites. Campground overall has a cozy feel with foliage creating some privacy. Short walk to beach from main parking lot on a path with a bit of slope, but is much easier than some of the other beach trails in the area. Second trail available from the other side of the campground. Highway can be heard and some sites are very close to the road. A couple of sites have partial ocean view but are far away from the beach. You can hear waves crashing from those sites. The BC Parks reservation system says which sites have partial water view. This is a good base for exploring the area. It is about an hour from Port Renfrew and 20 minutes from Sooke.

Having visited most of the beaches along highway 14 from Sooke to Port Renfrew, this is probably the most clean, has the most amenities and just as nice as the others. It's also the closest beach to the city, so easily accessible for a short nature break.
This is less crowded than China Beach, it's smaller, but has a playgound, well spaced out picnic benches, grassy areas and outhouses really close by. The other beaches are bigger and you could probably spend more time there, but you need to hike along the trail for a bit before arriving at the beach, so this is a good option for mutli-generational family trips, a picnic lunch stop, or rest for a few hours.
This beach is rocky and can get really windy, so it might not feel as hot as it looks, but bring sunscreen!

We took a driving tour from Tsawwassen, BC to Vancouver Island and visited Sooke and French Beach. The French beach is located on the scenic Straits of Juan De Fuca, west coast of southern Vancouver Island.
The French Beach Provincial Park provides camping sites, hiking traits and a nice sand and pebble beach for panic and swimming in the pristine cold water.
It is a great place to spot killer whales off shore as well as otters, seals and sea lions.
I was very impressed to find very clean toilets at the beach.

Last time we were here, there was an unrelenting breeze and guess what? It's still there! We came here during the heatwave and you wouldn't have known there was a heat dome over BC -- it was soo windy and cool. This beach is great for contemplative walks (pretty flat) but rocky (lots of smooth round rocks), making driftwood forts, and walking the dog. There is always the sound of waves and on a sunny day, the Olympic Mountain skyline. Campground nearby, picnic tables too, a playground nr the parking lot, and toilets. Plenty of (free) parking. There was a bear sighting posting when we went so be aware.

A fantastic walk when in need of some West coast magic. Very rocky so wear sturdy shoes. There is a heck of a drop off at the waters edge and a strong undertow so keep pets and young children close.

Went here with the dog to look around and see the beach. It was a lovely place with great views and scenic spots for picnics. Fire pits near the beach also make this a excellent spot to chill with a coffee and marshmallows. Will definitely come here with friends and family. Ample parking too which is always a bonus

Made the trip to French beach and walked down to (and all across) the beach. It’s a beautiful beach!
There was a rescue helicopter in the area that was interesting to watch. We believe they were just practicing but it was interesting to watch them lower and raise the rescuers from the helicopter.
We then went up to the picnic area and found a very private picnic table with shade and gorgeous views of the water and mountains. There are fire pits with seating around them near each picnic table too.
There are several wash rooms and also parking lot monitors (volunteers).
The walk to the beach is not difficult so most can take advantage of the views.

This is a fun beach with lots of drift-wood so instead of building a sand castle try your hand at building a life size lean-to.

Are there any beaches this weekend where campfires are allowed?
Written May 15, 2020

Hi.
Do I need reservation beforehand to car-camp overnight near the beach? How do I make a reservation?
Written December 22, 2018
The reservation system is for May through October. In the winter it is open to first come first spot, there are generally some open sites. If you are looking for a reservation during the summer it’s at the discovercamping website (I can’t place a link so you make need to google it) for any reservable bc parks site.

What’s it like canoeing at this beach?
I’ve seen the provincial site recommend against it, while another site recommended French beach as a good place to launch from for a canoe trip.
