About
Opened to the public in 2013, the Fernie Museum is located in the heart of historic downtown Fernie. The museum offers two floors of exhibits, a gift shop, archives and visitor information services. The main floor permanent exhibit highlights the story of the Fernie region, from the use of the area by the Ktunaxa to underground and open pit mining to the development of Fernie as a four-season resort community. The second floor gallery features rotating art and history exhibits. The Museum also offers a range of programs throughout the year, including popular themed walking tours during the summer. Museum staff are on hand to help guide your paths as your explore our museum, community and the environment around us – whether it is on the ski hill or on our many hiking or biking trails. Public washrooms are available and the facility offers barrier free access.

Cute museum, and if you are there in the next few weeks, they have an awesome textiles exhibit upstairs, with workshops related to various textiles, put on by the local weaving and spinning organization. The workshops are on the weekends, and I thoroughly enjoyed the silk demonstration.

Not large, but the exhibits are well-done and informative. You can learn a lot of history.
There is a gallery space upstairs with rotating exhibits.

The Fernie museum is located in an old bank downtown. Highly recommend stopping in. The timeline was very well done. Plan to spend about 30-45 minutes here. The art being displayed upstairs was not our taste, at all.

The space is well organized, but there's no getting around the fact it's a very small space.

There was no one else in the museum when we were there. In that regard, it was a good thing because there is not much room for many people at any one time.

I enjoyed it, but here's a (hopefully) helpful note to museum staff:

Many of the historical photos while interesting, lacked a description or explanation.

Some dates or description would really add to the experience.

As an example: there is a photo of a women's hockey team with swastikas on the jersey. Something you don't see every day. But, no date, explanation, context etc. Unfortunately, many of the photos lacked any detail.

Adding detail/description would be a fairly easy way for a substantial improvement.

The upstairs art gallery was not my cup of tea and did seem oddly out of place for a historical museum.

A nice little activity to fill part of a rainy day or just to swing by to get some knowledge and history of the local area.

Small museum, free and will fill up 15-30 minutes of your day.

It is always fascinating to learn about the history of a small town. Loved all the old photographs and the history of coal mining in the town.

An excellent use of $5 to support a super cool wee museum. Small, but packed with fascinating facts and interactive displays amid beautiful decor and architecture. Really enjoyed the temporary kimono exhibit up top. Staff also have tons of info and seem to love answering questions.

Informative and interesting museum. Cheap entry (free for children). You get to learn about the city, the coal, history and more. There are even some interactive activities for kids (and adults too).
There was an extra exhibit on the top floor about Geisha too.

The facility is small, but packs a lot of information. There are interesting summaries of Fernie's history available at the touch of a screen.
