The road to the seasonal Shaftsberry ferry from the south hill was missing a huge chunk that had fallen away. There was a temporary road built around the hole .
The free ferry ride is about 10 minutes if that.A tug boat is connected to a ferry like barge and operates quite smoothly for such a sideways combination.
Be prepared for mosquitoes during the season as they can be nasty here.

My first trip to peace River and it was amazing to take this trailer back to where my grandparents homesteaded and my mother was born. It was very emotional to see the beauty that my mother saw as she grew up. Their particular Homestead area lake lot 36 unfortunately will be a gravel pit one day.
I know now what my mother meant when she talked about yearning to be back at the homestead
There is much history along this trail and I need to go back to soak in more of that wonderful feeling, beauty, and past

Be sure to stop at the MacKenzie Cairn and St. Augustine's Mission. The MacKenzie Cairn is difficult to spot because a tree has grown up in front of it. There is an obvious road marker directing you to it.

The Trail winds along the hills down the Peace River Valley along the mighty Peace River, the scenery is awesome, stop at various market gardens along the way for fresh fruit and produce. Take the ferry ride across the river and back. We like to park our car and walk onto the ferry. The view of the river and surrounding hills is spectacular. There's many other historical spots to stop as well.

Take a trip down shaftsberry trail and enjoy the beauty of the peace river valley and the mighty peace river. Check out the Makenzie Carin and find your way to Peace Valley guest Ranch for a great steak supper and a trail ride in the valley if you so desire. Especially beautiful in the fall the peace river valley was the highway for the early fur traders and settlers, still abundant with wildlife and waterfowl the Peace river valley is a delightful place to visit if your in the area

Not a lot of traffic on this road so you can enjoy the long distance views as you go. Quite the contrast from the river valley - flat farm land but lots of trees as well.

I love this drive! It's very scenic, and has some great spots to pull over and learn a little about the area's interesting history. Some great views of the river - it would just be nice to have more lay-bys so you could take more pictures!

You can drive all the way down to the Shaftesbury Ferry, and cross over to Tangent Park and carry on south to Hwy 49 via Hwy 740 (approx 1hr 17mins), OR turn and follow 684 up out of the valley back to Highway 2 (it comes out just south of Grimshaw) (approx 28mins) - both of these routes are paved. A third option (for the adventurous) is to continue past the ferry down Township Road 820/821 (where the road goes to gravel) which comes out of the valley as Range Road 242 and if followed to the end joins Highway 2. Alternatively turn left on Township Road 824 and come out to Highway 2 near Berwyn (approx. 45 mins).
