Oh My! Even if you are not a quilter, or have no general interest in the craft of quilting (such as I), you cannot help but be totally captivated by the beautiful works of art (and that’s essentially what Laurie Swim’s quilts are) which are on display in this enchanting little gallery. Laurie Swim, now in her 70s, is a Nova Scotian artist / quilter who has taken the craft of quilting to a much higher level - a spectacular art form rather than a colourful throw for your bed.

I found myself peering closely at amazing stitchings, beautiful threads and fabrics and textiles, gorgeous colour combinations, and the intricate use of tiny shells and crystals and the like, which adds another wonderful dimension to her works of art.

I’d heard about the artist via her incredible ’Hope and Survival’ memorial quilt which she created for the commemoration of the 1917 explosion which ripped Halifax apart 100 years ago, as we were exploring sites relating to this event in Halifax.

This gallery is certainly worth a visit, to see a collection of Laurie’s works at close range. There’s quite a number of her quilts on display. The assistant at the gallery was helpful, explaining Laurie’s work and giving information about her techniques and how she goes about creating her masterpieces (because that is what they are).

The gallery is free to visit; there’s a nice collection of cards and books for purchase there.

It’s located at 138 Lincoln Street in Lunenburg, towards the western end of the town. It’s a must for quilters and art lovers alike! For those with mobility impairments, note that there are some stairs up to the gallery entrance.

Thank you so very much for taking the time to write such a kind review of us. Your support is greatly appreciated. And yes, Laurie has developed techniques and processes that have taken a traditional medium into a contemporary practice. We are looking forward to seeing you again!

Incredible talent and patience displayed by the textile artist Laurie Swim. Such beautiful quilts - like photographs but made with materials. Great cards and postcards of her work if you can't afford an original item.

It would be impossible not to rate this type of unique art at the highest level possible. It is brilliantly conceived and executed. Inspires the imagination. We will bring our grandchildren around for a visit later in the summer to show them the level of detail and inspiration possible in this particular art form expression.

Laurie has an amazing God-given talent and it becomes apparent the moment you walk in the door. My wife and I were amazed at the work and have since become fans.

I have known about Laurie Swim for many years. She is a fine artist from Nova Scotia who uses fabric, threads & dyes as her medium. Being an admirer of her work and familiar with her art did not prepare me for being completely dumbfounded by the beauty & skill of the art in real life. Astounding. Gobsmacked. Overwhelmed to almost being unable to speak. If you love fabric, quilting, visual art, you must stop here. Be prepared to be awed!

Most galleries in Nova Scotia are closed by mid October so we were pleased that this small gallery in Lunenburg is open year round. The gallery features the amazing work of Laurie Swim. Laurie met us at the door as the gallery opens at 11 pm and we discussed her beautiful work. Prices for her quilt art range from $1000-$60000 so they are beyond the range of the average tourist but prints of her work and art cards are available at reasonable cost. The distinction between fine craftsman and artist can be debated but Laurie is both Her art is magnificent and amazingly detailed building up threads and fabric to create the texture of Nova Scotia. Few textile artists are capable of creating such detailed work that so beautifully captures the essence of the maritime life and landscape. Although represented in many collections I would hope the National Gallery of Art would purchase one of Laurie's work- so representative is it of Nova Scotia but also of the Canadian experience. For those wealthy art collectors, one of Laurie's pieces would make an excellent addition to your collection!

Laurie Swim's quilts are not what you would expect to cover up with on a cold winter night. These are simply breathtaking works of art which are hard to distinguish between a painting and a work with needle and thread. This is no ordinary type quilt shop but a gallery with gallery prices for works that are work every cent. This is a shop but it is also a real attraction as part of the Lunenburg scene. WONDERFUL FEAST FOR THE EYES.

I had read about the Laurie Swim Gallery and put it on my "must do" list on our recent trip to Lunenburg. Her textile art work is amazing. The pieces that reflect Nova Scotia, mariner life, etc. were my favorites. She also had some interesting pieces with Braille.

I just assumed that her work was made totally by hand, but we learned that, no, it is made with machines. Regardless, it is really beautiful.

We could not afford an original piece (large or small), so we purchased 4 prints that we will have framed. We selected ones that we felt represented the "flavor" of Nova Scotia. I have included photos of the prints in my review. It should be noted that they respectively ask you not to take photos of the original artwork in the gallery unless you photo the piece with an individual standing beside the work.

It was a perfect rainy, cold day in Nova Scotia, so we spent it downtown, starting with this gallery and moving on to other stores.

There were huge fabric works (quilts) which were beautiful, but at $50,000 each seemed a lot over-priced.
