Yeah, the roof leaks, and it can be cold in the winter. But it's a great place to stop and browse. Clothes, housewares, camping gear, books, furniture, water toys, all sorts of interesting stuff. From the other reviews it seems people want The Bay. It is what it is, and I like it.

Came here 5 years ago and thought it was a lovely shop. Prices are high on some things but the wood products are fairly decently priced. I have to say though it is going downhill. It is looking very very run down.
Buckets all over the store and I mean all over the store. This is a health and safety rush to customers and staff. Not to mention the mold that will be growing now from the leaks. Looking at other reviews this has been going on for a long time. Might be time to make some changes. Definitely does not look like the pictures on here anymore. Don't bother getting off the highway for a visit.

This place used to be amazing, with so many artisan objects at reasonable prices, fun Muskoka clothing, and the big ticket items like water sports gear and cottage furnishings. Over the years it has become too expensive and with too many major brand labels, and for us, has lost its uniqueness. Sorry to say, but I think we will stop coming here on our trips north.

Canada's Original Cottage Store continues to impress and surprise. The General Store format is great because there are so many different types of products from kitchen to outdoor to water sports to stylish cottage apparel. When I was at the store last, I ended up buying awesome LTD gear (which I didn't even know they sold) and wearing the clothing frequently for the rest of summer! Also, the staff are super friendly—don't hesitate to ask them questions or call in advance to get advice about products.

My family and I decided to drop by today and take a look around. It was not what we were expecting at all. Extremely expensive and LEAKS EVERYWHERE!!! Oh my goodness you seriously needed an umbrella. And it's freezing in there!! No heat!!! Building is falling apart; I don't know how it can pass inspection! Will never ever return!!

We are frequently up at the Cottage between Gravenhurst and Balanced and often stop in at the Muskoka Store. There are many beautiful things to look at and for a Muskoka souvenir stop it's a great place.

I decided to take a little bit of the charm home with me and commissioned the stores artist to paint me one of the hand painted signs. You choose the size of sign that you like, the wash colour and font colour. It is very detailed and specific. It is all filled out on the order form. No room for error. This was August 29th 2014 and the sign was to be a Christmas present for my partner. Anyways, about a month and a half later they called to say the sign was ready for pickup... Wrong colour wash and font colour. They apologized and asked the artist to redo it. Early December, after numerous phone calls I was told the sign was ready...it looked exactly the same... Had not been repainted at all. The artist himself said the store had given him the incorrect info regarding the colour choices and personally guaranteed to complete the sign in time for Christmas and hand deliver it to our home.

Well we got no sign for Christmas. Apparently the artist messed up many other orders of hand painted signs that he had "promised" to complete in time for Christmas and hand deliver.

The store manager, Christine. and assistant manager were very apologetic and assured me that the artist had been fired for his incredibly lame behaviour and that a new artist had been commissioned. She (they assured me) would get my sign completed within 2 weeks.

It has now been 4.5 wks since that conversation and still no sign of the sign.

My opinion...

Take your business elsewhere. There's many beautiful stores in Bala & Gravenhurst.

On Dec 9th they advertised aChristmas Market. I traveled 21/2 hrs to go to this event after seeing it advertised in a magazine. I was so disappointed. Upon entering I saw many buckets on the floor catching water dripping from the ceiling. There was nothing special happening this day for the Christmas Market. The items are priced extremely high and selection was disappointing. The bathrooms were disgusting. I will not returning to this store.

Stopped in on our way through Muskoka as heard so many good things and needed a birthday gift. Was shocked at the outrageous pricing on almost every item including a $200 sweater that sells online retail for $70. Unable to walk around the store for more than 5 feet without sidestepping a bucket on the floor for leaks, but we made a game out of it and counted 47 in total.

First time to this store to buy Adirondack Chairs that were on special. Never visited the store and I wish I had found it earlier. Very big as each section was an add-on over the years. You must visit the washroom, Toilet paper is hiding, garbage is hidden, rustic looking toilet that is a replica of an out house but it was fun and cute. This store has everything country written all over it. Lots of wood everywhere. Enough space to walk around comfortably and plenty of ideas for decorating kitchen tables with moose, deer, etc. They sell Hudson bay Blankets, furniture for just about every room in a house, stand up paddle boards, life jackets, clothes. All under one roof, be aware the prices can be high. Very helpful staff.
