The view at Sulphur Gates, Willmore Wilderness Park a short drive west of Grande Cache is just breathtaking. If you are in Hinton, take the 1.5 hour drive on scenic Highway 40 going north to Grande Cache to see this hidden gem of northern Rockies where the Smoky River and the Sulphur River meet. You won't be disappointed.

We stopped in to see the canyon at Sulphur Gates. Highly recommend, the views are spectacular. The road in is a fairly well packed gravel, but beware large stones. We took our motorcycle down the road and did okay, but it was slow going. Well worth the stop!

There are 4 look-out areas mounted in the cliff face above the river at Sulphur Gate. Just a short drive north of Grande Cache is the turn-off for Willmore and then a short drive to the parking at Sulphur Gates. Left trail leads to look-out areas - Right trail is a bit more rugged and leads to Eaton Falls. Simply beautiful.

Willmore Park features numerous well-developed hiking trails and camping sites but the most notable sight to see is the Sulphur Gates. Getting to the viewpoint will require some light hiking and the walkway is quite steep so do dress appropriately. Once at the Sulphur Gates it is a spectacular mountain and river view. Definitely worth a stop.

We headed out to see the Sulphur Gates which have an easy access path and well maintained viewing points. We then hiked to Eaton Falls. It took about two hours round trip with a child so it was not overly difficult but there is some incline at the beginning but we just took it slow. The falls were well worth the hike. The trails are nice and well maintained. The Eaton Falls trail head was marked when we went.

I have backpacked and taken horse trips into this wilderness park since 1979 and have travelled many of the trails. Willmore does not allow motorized vehicles so foot, horse or mountain bikes are the only way to travel this park. Willmore is a true wilderness park, no bridges, limited signage and horse trails. Most trails have limited development. Travellers to the park must have wilderness experience or travel with someone who has this experience. Willmore has spectacular mountain scenery along with a variety of wildlife. I have run into everything from grizzly bears to wolverine and moose to bighorn sheep. The park, located north of Jasper National Park has much of the same scenery without the crowds. Camping may occur almost anywhere in the park and there are many established horse camps. I would recommend this park to any avid outdoors person. It should be noted that hunting is allowed in Willmore during the appropriate seasons.

One of the staff at the Grande Cache Cultural Center recommended we visit the Park. It was well worth our time. The scenery and views were breath taking. It was a short but very interesting hike around to viewpoint trail and looked like a nice campground as well.
