Cute little museum . Simple gift shop with bottle of water and some cool
Old postcards . Person working the front counter was little lost with their job but they were lovely .
It’s not pet friendly and no flash photography . Nice wide hallways .

'The Fort' tells the history of the expansion of original mounties into western Canada to combat the whiskey trade from south of the border, lay down the law for settlers and deal with the indigenous tribes. It was a daunting task done consummately. The main museum has a good deal of history. The change in mountie attire over the decades is on display. Life at the time is exhibited. The equipment used was shown. What the original Fort Macleod looked like is depicted. In the re-enaced fort there is a law office, indigenous artifacts, a church, a dispensary among other rooms to visit. Crowfoot, the first chief who decided to sign Treaty #7, is featured. There is an extensive gift shop. Overall it was a fine tribute to the men who had to provide law and order in the west of the fledging country.

I was not disappointed in the Fort itself. However, I would not do the musical ride attraction. Having seen the real RCMP do the musical ride a number of times this did not compare. It consisted of local highschool students riding mismatched horses. They get away with it by calling it the Northwest Mounted Police Musical Ride so it is not quite false advertising, but we were fooled enough to go see it. It is not worth the extra money. Go see the real thing.

Hi Darren, Thank you for your honest review. I am happy to hear that you enjoyed your visit through the museum and can understand your disappointment when comparing our NWMP Musical Ride to the fabulous RCMP one. Although we do try our best to provide a piece of living history in our performance, we do not have the large funds to invest into our ride as the RCMP does. We rely heavily on donations and the talent of our community and region to keep this important part of history alive! Thanks for your understanding. Best, the E.D.

The Fort in Fort Macleod is at a distinct disadvantage as it is in the vicinity of 5-star attractions such as the Buffalo Jump, the Frank Slide, and Waterton National Park. In the context of these sorts of sights, the Fort is a bit underwhelming. That said, it is still a nice visit (albeit relatively pricey). Those who have been to other major “fort” sites will find it a bit small but the horse performance is a nice touch and something one does not encounter elsewhere. Parking is across the street...use caution when crossing and use the cross-walk. It is also good to schedule your visit around the horse performances as this is really the highlight of the visit. The museum section was also interesting and did a nice job of providing the history of the RCMP in this area of Alberta.

Lots of interesting facts and information about our RCMP. Musical ride was a value added adventure. The fort was set up as an original North West Mounted Police headquarters. Well worth a visit.

We stopped in our return from Glacier NP to Calgary -- Fort Macleod is kind of midway. We are museum buffs and we're pleasantly surprised by the diversity of the exhibits, the restored portions of the original fort, and the descriptive materials supporting the story of the original purpose and challenges of the mounties, and the role they played in settling of this part of Alberta and western Canada. It was a great complement to our earlier visit to the Smashed Head Buffalo Jump museum, which covered some of the same material from the perspective of the native Americans who first roamed the land. A fun stop, highly recommend.

Lovely museum, interesting exhibits on the RCMP and Fort Macleod. It was well worth the stop, However, other than running around the fort, it’s not very interactive for children. There is a museum shop, but I was hoping for more selection for Fort merchandise.

Well loved from my childhood, I’m glad I took my family there.

It was a bit hokey. But the exhibits were interesting for the most part. We were surprised that admission was not included in our CANOO card. But some of the interpretative experiences with reanactors were good.

My Wife and I visited here which is set up to resemble the original Fort Macleod with the buildings that comprised the fort full of displays and artifacts depicting what life would have been like in the late 1800’s. The highlight of the visit was the RCMP or should I say the NWMP musical ride.

Enjoyed visiting this site and learning so much about the early days in Canada and of the history of this very famous police force which evolved from the North West amounted Police to today’s Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
