It's been a while since I've written a review. Covid broke my pattern and it's been tough getting back into it. My experience last might prompted me to write again, though.

Four of us went to their 'Spring Fling' last night. $50 for wine and snacks. It was supposed to be 2hrs with entertainment. It was at a weird time - 5:30 to 7:30. Dinner time but no dinner.

You check in at the door and get handed one of your two glasses of wine. A glass of what I think was sparkling Pinot Grigio. The glasses had all been poured in advance so I have no idea how long they had been sitting there unchilled. They sat there for the rest of the evening too. Not a good start. They hand you a ticket to get your glass of Malbec later.

The food was absolutely dreadful. Stale baguettes, stale crackers, four kinds of cheese with no indication what any of them were. Oysters on the half shell that were not restocked for those who went up later. A smattering of prosciutto that had been sitting around so long that it had gotten stiff. Some sort of what I think was shredded tuna maybe? I couldn't tell from the look, there was no label, and it didn't taste like anything at all. The vegetable table had some odd yellow sauce that looked like mustard and tasted sort of like hummus. There was a mushroom pate that was ok.

When you went up to get your glass of malbec it felt like you were being doled out nuclear fuel. The guy pouring the wine first poured the wine into a measuring glass sighting carefully to the indicated volume to ensure he didn't go over. That was then transferred into a wine glass and then subsequent glasses were poured next to that reference glass so that they were a match. It was bizarre to watch. I've been to many wineries and they generally pour quite freely seeing as how it's their own product.

The entertainment was Edie Daponte. If you live on Vancouver Island you've seen her in her red dress with her guitarist many times. She gets around.

For $100 a couple it was a HUGE ripoff.

We left after an hour and do not recommend.

As we were starting our drive back to the ferry, Don aid let's go in to the winery. We haven't done that since we lived in Oliver. So, away we go.

We were seated outside and our serve, Mike, has the greatest sense of humor and, ladies, he resembles George Clooney. We ordered our beverages and he explained the differences of their wine to Kelly so she could make a choice

We ordered a Charcuterie platter to share and it was lovely. Our server, Mike, took his time to explain the wines and it was a nice experience. Yes, we would go here again. It was most pleasant.

My husband and I had our wedding at Church estate this summer. Our guests could not same more wonderful things about how beautiful the venue was for both ceremony and reception. The photos turned out amazing and the venue speaks for itself with limited décor needed. However our experience leading up to the big day was BEYOND stressful. We had 4 different coordinators who did not seem to handover notes. On countless occasions I was having to re submit table sizes, linen, wine, etc. For example we went to do wine tasting one day and choose wines for the wedding day. Then 4 months later received an email stating we need to come in to choose our wines. They did not remember our conversations, us and did not communicate same to new coordinator. There was many issues on multiple invoices. Ensure to have everything in writing that you discuss planning up to the day. There is no consistency.
At times it would take weeks to hear back from everyone and they would have no idea what was said to the previous coordinator.
My wedding guests are drinkers I will say that and probably more of a rowdy crowd then they were a customized too. However there was no reason for guests to feel that they were being spoken to rudely and a bother to staff. On the wedding day staff were extremely rude to guests and us. I did not feel that it was a personable experience. I expect that on your big day staff would come to you and say “how are things going” “can we be of any support” “congratulations”. It felt cold and that we were a bother. At one point they ran out of liquor and were rude about it... “Sorry you guys got made a killing that night and weren’t prepared to serve alcohol to a wedding of 100 plus” Also you’re paying BIG money for poor support, poor communication and honestly not a positive experience.
I will say there catering company they are currently utilizing was amazing- TRUFFLES is great and there staff were amazing. However if you don’t want to plan your wedding 10 times then re consider the venue or hire a wedding planner to deal with the stress for you! Over all it was a killer party and beautiful spot. Hopefully they find more consistent staff for wedding coordinating for others to not experience the level of stress we did.

After just visiting the Butterfly Gardens I stopped here so my wife could do a wine tasting.

The wines were hit-and-miss, but that happens at a lot of tastings. The really disappointing part is the service. The person helping us was maybe assisting 4 couples (including us). She only poured wine. That’s it. No effort to describe the wines or make any small talk. Once she even poured a wine and didn’t bother telling us which one she poured. Not sure if other staff were the same, but it was not an enjoyable experience. If a friend asked if worth visiting, I wouldn’t.

Staff doing tasting was not very engaging. He was more concerned with emptying the dishwasher despite only about 6 people in the tasting room. Majority of the wines are not from locally sourced vineyards. The grapes come from the Okanagan.
We probably would have bought a bottle but the extravagant tasting fee, like most other wineries is not waived if you purchase their product .
Now I know why we have never visited this winery in the Okanagan.

My husband and I had originally enjoyed the Church & State Syrah as a restaurant in Invermere, BC. When planning our trip to Victoria this was a priority. Our wine tasting was graciously hosted by Tony and the wines were delicious. Because of air travel, we were limited to our 2 favourites: Viogner and the Meritage. We enjoyed the shelter and patio heaters on a cooler Oct afternoon. The food was delicious (fish sandwich and beet salad). I would recommend you visit!

We made an online booking for a weekday wine tasting and showed up a bit early, apologetically. But there was no problem accommodating us on this day: we were the only visitors to the winery! Our hostess was friendly and chatty, and we enjoyed our 5-wine tasting of wines from both their Vancouver Island and Okanagan vineyards. We particularly enjoyed the Roussane, and would have ordered wine to ship home, but they don’t currently deliver to our location. The building itself is beautiful in the West Coast style, with vineyard and mountain views. The grounds are lovely, and there is plenty of parking. We will definitely return!

We are wine club members to several of California and BC's top wineries. We find the C&S wines to be excellent - and excellent value. As is the case with most restaurants and bars, navigating the Covid restrictions make it challenging for those in the hospitality industry. We find that the Bistro has innovative and good food albeit with a more limited menu this year for obvious reasons. A lunch with a full bottle of wine here is a great bargain as you don't pay the usual restaurant 100% to 200% markup on wine. We enjoy the fish tacos and seafood chowder. If the weather cooperates you can take a packed picnic to their upper picnic area.
The winery and facility is beautiful and well worth a visit.

Hi Colin, thank you for taking the time to write us a response. We are so glad you enjoyed your visit with us. We enjoy offering our customers the opportunity to purchase our wines as close to the retail pricing as possible in our Bistro. See you again soon!

My wife and I have wanted to visit Church and State for some time. Finally got a chance to get away for the weekend and made a reservation for 12pm. We had indicated that we would like to eat and do a tasting.
We got to Victoria early and emailed to see if we could bump our reservation back by and hour and were given a reply email promptly saying they could accommodate us at 11:30 which was fine.
The establishment was slow and late to open, as we passed by the tasting bar we had a quick chat with a young lady who we told we were looking forward to a tasting. She asked if we had a separate reservation for the tasting, which we didn’t realize was required, told her no and she didn’t seem to think there would be an issue getting us in.
The line up and ordering process was a bit cumbersome. You place your order off the menu that is taped to the inside of a plastic “Covid” barrier. We were not given any suggestions or wine pairing options. We decided to go for the full charcuterie and cheese board ($45) and a bubbly Prosecco style white. We were told to find table 8 and went to sit.
We were greeted quickly enough by a young woman who was pleasant but not personable (she may have been new and nervous). Our wine came quickly and was quite good. Our charcuterie board, however, was AWFUL. There was 3 types of meat, all of which only had three slices cut paper thin each. There were three small portions of cheese, none of which were special - Boursin store bought cheese, a Swiss type and one other that was such small a portion I don’t recall the type. There was a Dijon mustered and a table spoon size of pickled veg.

When you order a $45 charcuterie board, you expect a $45 charcuterie board. We had another later in the day at Aura Restaurant (Laurel Point Inn - highly recommend) which was half the price and double the size!

To add insult to injury, we then asked if we could do a tasting (and would have happily paid to do the tasting at our table if there was no room at the bar) to which we were told that it wasn’t possible. This is the first time that we have been to a winery where we have left with no history of the winery, nor a tasting, nor a case or two of wine.

I will not go back, nor will I purchase their wine. Skip this winery and drive north a bit and visit Unsworth or Avrill Creek....it is worth the drive!

Hi there, first we want to thank you for your honest feedback. It is important to us to receive this information in order to improve our offerings to our guests. We have taken a look at our charcuterie option to improve and enhance it's offering. We do apologize that you were unable to book a tasting with us at the same time. We have been quite short staffed this season but this does not mean that we haven't brainstormed some solutions to improve on this since your review. We are working on offering some self-guided options with information on our winery, wines, terroir and other location that will be available at the tables for guests to learn from. Again, we want to thank you for taking the time to let us know of your experience and allowing us to grow from our mistakes. If you have anything else to add, please contact our Operations Manager, marketing@churchandstatewines.com

We travel to the Okanagan valley regularly and have visited Church and State Winery but were thrilled to learn they had a location on the island! We had a lovely wine tasting. Their sparkling wine is wonderful and it’s only available at this location. Next it was lunch on the patio. The charcuterie platter was tasty - if a bit sparse for the price. Nevertheless we had a great time. Service was excellent as well. We will definitely return.
