Poça das Lesmas is a real natural gem. This site, with its pools formed in volcanic rock, offers breathtaking views. Swimming in these crystal clear waters while admiring the landscape is an unforgettable experience. The stone arch that overlooks the site adds a touch of magic to the place, making it even more charming.
Access is easy, which is a real plus, and there is a nice little bar nearby where you can cool off after a swim. It is an absolutely beautiful place, perfect for relaxing and reconnecting with nature. A must visit for lovers of beautiful landscapes!

As a volcanic island, Madeira’s beaches are mostly volcanic rocks and stones, but the black sand beach at Seixal has soft, fine sand to walk on. We enjoyed walking along the beach and dipping our toes in the water. Walk to the other end of the beach to stand under a small waterfall and discover small caves to explore. We didn't stay to relax on the beach as we had an action-packed touristy day ahead of us.
We visited to experience a black sand beach (which was great), but also we had read that there are sea caves at the Seixal natural pools that you can swim in. I read, "The natural pools are easily accessible via the concrete stairs and the pools are calm to swim in, even if the sea just outside is rough. Remember to bring towels to lie out on. Entrance is free." Maybe it was low tide or something? but we totally did not experience anything like this! The rock pool we saw is located just across the concrete walkway from the black send beach, yes there are concrete steps down but these just lead to an area with very large pebbles/stones that is extremely difficult to walk on. The water is far away and so shallow you would have to wade out for a long long way, not at all feasible on the treacherous large pebbles/rocks. There was an archway that looked like it might be a sea cave but we couldn't get anywhere near it. (see photos)
That was the only disappointing part of our trip though. There is a mini viewpoint that just takes a couple of minutes to climb up to and from there you can see lovely views across the natural pool to the sea.
There are showers, toilets and a cafe next to the beach. Parking is free, but aim to arrive early before 11am as after that it gets very busy.
Note: when driving to/from Seixel, visit the nearby Miradouro do Véu da Noiva to see a waterfall that leads straight into the ocean. This viewpoint is beautiful and extremely easy to reach as only a few seconds walk from the nearby parking lot.

Be aware that the wall that protects the sewage works was damaged in June 23 and now the sewage works gets breached in high seas. We went today hoping to swim but the brown sewage was clearly visible from the cliffs above. Disgusting. Not sure how long it would take for the water to clear after that. Had hoped to swim this week but not now.

She deserves it. The road is very, very steep and very narrow to access the parking lot. And in the village at the top there is very little space and on weekends you can't even move around because people park everywhere. I prefer Seixal's. Certainly here it is wilder. If you are young, prefer this one and avoid weekends.

This beach was one of the most beautiful beaches in Madeira! Black sand beach, beautiful mountains, natural waterfalls.
But be careful, we swam there and husband got hit hard by huge wave and one ear was in strong pain. The waves there are huge and strong, only few people were swimming there.
Also, this was the dirtiest beach of all, because once you enter the water - the seaweeds gets all wrapped up around your feet, then the whole body+the tiny tiny sand pieces, different size of corals kept falling off my bikini which was a bit disgusting… Still, it’s nature, just didn’t know that it was that full seaweeds. Throughout the week I kept finding sand pieces in my ears.. the whole week.. so it’s better to avoid those huge waves, because they smash you under the water and you just end up diving under the waves.
There’s a shower and natural waterfall where you can clean your body after this kind of swimming (in the photo you can see all of the “goods” that kept falling out of the bathing suits on the ground that doesn’t look very nice).
The parking in there is free.

We like the pools in Seixal more than those in Porto Moniz. It is a more rustic beauty, which presents many more dangers, especially for children.
On the other hand, hours of observation are lost.
The holey stone is just a few meters from the entrance and the feeling is wonderful!

Please be aware of how dangerous this place is. My sister almost drowned being swept into the sea by a huge wave, although she was more then 3metres from the edge! Later we heard this is called 'the pool of death' by locals and 7 people drowned recently by being swept into the sea. This place is unguarded so help is 20-30 minutes away. My sister barely made it. Its a beautiful place, but dont underestimate nature's force and stay away from the edge, meaning at least 4-5 meters! Be warned!

There are no many places to enjoy a swim in the sea in Madeira. The sea is very strong, you better be a good swimmer. But in these swimming pools you can enjoy the sea with the quietness and security of a swimming pool. And the lanscape is beautiiful. An absolute must !

Really cool place with a natural pool amongst the rocks. Exciting to see the Atlantic waves crashing over the rocks too. Great place to spend an afternoon.
