Two very interesting exhibitions and a very good cafe. Studios weren't open, but they are once a month - look out for dates.

Called in hoping to see an art exhibition but unfortunately there were none on at the time, every studio was closed so nothing to see really so we nipped into the cafe for a drink.

Spike Island comprises both an exhibition space and professional artists studios. When I visited this week they were curating a significant exhibition by Korean artist Kim Young-Il and I understand they have a wide programme throughout the year. The exhibition I went to was free, but donations were welcomed. It was a totally unusual and inspiring retrospective of the art of Lubaina Hamid, an African artist who has produced a thought provoking installation of 100 stand up figures of Africans who were slaves,...More

Popped in whilst watching the Tour of Britain cycling which went past Spike Island's front door. A good selection of beverages and cakes, great bacon butties and filter coffee so strong that it has a gold medal in Olympic weight-lifting. (Locally sourced quality coffee supplied...More

A worthy addition to this area. The light and airy atmosphere and great coffee make it a place to linger over the papers. The staff are helpful and efficient and decor pleasantly minimalist - but hey: it's a coffee shop and the coffee is great...More
