The Exchange is a major contemporary art space in the centre of Penzance that opened in 2007 in conjunction with renovations to Newlyn Art Gallery. Together the galleries present contemporary work in all media by regional, national and international artists, with a programme of events, activities and education.

Formerly the town’s telephone exchange, the huge space retains the original industrial feel of the building and features a large t-shaped gallery and a striking glass facade that runs the entire length of the building. It is well suited to installation and social participation projects and its international reputation allows it to bring some of the best art being produced around the globe to Cornwall.

The Exchange is located off historic Chapel Street, within easy walking distance of the bus and train stations. There is a well-stocked book and gift shop plus a cafe serving snacks and light lunches. Well behaved dogs are welcome.

A very nice little gallery space tucked away on a side street off the charming Chapel Street, friendly welcoming staff on arrival and a nice little shop area as you come in/leave. The entry fee was very reasonable, and included entry to a second space in nearby Newlyn (we'd hoped to go there too, but were sidetracked by the excellent... More

This is small but beautifully formed gallery. The current exhibition: Liberties is very well curated, thought provoking and inspiring as was the work of young local artists. The staff were so informative and helpful. £2 for 7 days admission to here and the Newlyn Gallery was amazing value. Lovely building with sea views from the cafe. Highly reccomended

Small gallery usually featuring contemporary art. Usually free admission but £3.50 for this exhibition - worth the cost as although not a large number of works what is on show is very moving, often reflecting violent activities in Pakistan. A large exhibit is connected to a recent large work at Truro Cathedral. The admission ticket also allows entry to a... More

I have to say firstly that me and my fiancee are not modern art lovers, so maybe this wasn't for us, but really it did nothing for us whatsoever really. For one thing, there was very little actually here. Two or three small-ish rooms, which took us no time at all to get round. We felt out £7.50 (for both... More

We go to the exchange quite often when they have a new show and there have been some absolutely splendid and brilliant exhibitions. The Imran Qureshi exhibition which we paid £3.50 each to enter was difficult to enjoy. The works on display were very large and so there were only four. Five to ten minutes was enough. I tied hard... The Exchange Gallery in Penzance is a fairly small gallery (the old telephone exchange) with some interesting exhibits and is worth visiting if you are planning to visit other attractions in the area on the same day. There is no entrance fee although they do ask you for a small donation and the gallery is run by volunteers, who are... More

Popped into the Exchange with no idea what to expect . Saw part of this amazing "meditation on our relationship with the sea"... Some beautiful footage of the sea, Polar Bears and Whales - with poetry and fantastic sound track. Some grueling images of whaling and thought provoking images.

I would recommend going on a regular basis as the exhibitions are well worth the travel time, the staff are so friendly and helpful and the experience is a must .
