Powderham Castle is the family home of the 18th Earl & Countess of Devon. It was originally built by Sir Philip Courtenay in 1391 and despite undergoing many transformations since surviving the ravages of the civil war in the 17th century, it has remained in the same family. Entertaining guided tours bring the fascinating history to life, you will find them engaging whatever your age. Discover secret doors, stunning architecture and even a haunted landing. We would advise you to allow at least 3 hours for your visit so you can take time to explore the many acres of gardens and grounds. The Walled Garden is home to our friendly Powderham pets, including Tessa the tortoise and Harry the donkey, and is a safe haven for our little visitors. Relax in the peaceful surroundings, from the beautiful Rose Garden, overlooking the deer park and Exe estuary to the Woodland Garden, with its stunning collection of trees. For the keener walker the breathtaking views from the foot of the Belvedere tower are very rewarding - you can see for miles and feel on top of the world! Before you leave visit the Powderham Country Store. Here you will find Toby Buckland's wonderful plant shop, the Powderham General Trading Co with its range of gifts, clothes and home furnishings and a fantastic food hall, bakery and butcher.

We so look forward to listening to this recital however I feel that we were attending a rehursal of the players. No music was given any thought to what the audience would appreciate it was so off the wall that most of the audience were falling asleep. I took my 94 year old mother as a treat " What was... More

What a wonderful place, great castle and on the hill the Belvedere tower overlooks the entire estuary. Wildlife, country grounds, music festivals, medieval jousting and more.

We had a lovely walk around the grounds of Powderham Castle last weekend. We took our toddler and watched the deer in the fields. A tour around the farm shop was also good too!

Tour of castle takes an hour, if possible get Dave as the tour guide, very informative & chatty with a few surprises along the way for the children with inquisitive minds..... Nature trails and animals are great fun for kids, tickets expensive but they have to cover costly maintenance etc, if you want to get on the safari tour book... More

We were staying in Dawlish and wanted a fun family day out my my husbands birthday when we came across this gem! Powderham Castle really does offer something for everyone. A grim miserable rainy day uplifted by a visit to Powderham Castle, a slice of history presented to us by the knowledgeable guide. A guided tour of this property is essential and our guide on the day was excellent but I cannot now remember his name!

Very friendly staff and interesting Castle. Our tour guide was Mike and he was very informative and especially good with the kids. Nice tea shop also, we didn't have time to check the whole grounds out but the tractor ride to visit the Deer would be a must for anyone with children.
