The Quay House was re-built in 1680-1 at the height of Exeter's woollen cloth industry. The building was used to store cloth and other goods before they were loaded and transported down the canal. It also had an overhanging roof, which enabled cargos to load and unload out of the rain.Today the history and development of Exeter's Quayside is brought to life with lively displays, illustrations and artefacts. There is also the opportunity to see "Exeter - 2,000 years of history," an exciting audio-visual presentation highlighting Exeter's history from Roman times to the present day.The Quay House Visitor Centre provides tourist information, Quayside treasure hunts, an accommodation booking service and a gift shop selling local pottery, replica maps and a wide range of local interest books. The Quay House Visitor Centre is the first attraction in Devon to be awarded VisitEngland's PIQAS Award (Place of Interest Quality Assurance Scheme).

Nice to be able to look inside the old Custom House for free. A few information boards in each room and a small information centre on the ground floor. Worth popping in for 10 minutes if you are visiting the quays but would have been disappointed if I went solely to visit the house. Opens at 10am.

Great building and lots of history but in need of some money spending on it. Really good location on the quay but underutilised . Nice that it is free but then again very few actual artifacts and virtually entirely A frame displays with big posters detailing the history. A museum on the cheap. Come on Exeter City Council spend some... More

It would be helpful if I could actually find the website for the Quay - spent 20mins already - Devon website, council, etc, NO JOY! Do they actually have a website?!

I popped into the Custom house and I enjoyed looking around at the exhibits, the architecture and history of the building. There is a short video to watch, exquisite ceiling plaster presentation and background detail. I liked wondering around the rooms and learning more about the development at the height of the wool and port trade.

To be able to experience the environment and to see the actual items within their context, brings history to life for me. I learned a lot about Exeter and enjoyed my perambulation around the exhibits.

The staff member in the visitor centre was very helpful and knowledgeable about the area and made helpful suggestions. The building itself is incredibly beautiful with amazing cornice work in the upper floor rooms. However, the displays were rather spartan upstairs which had the effect of making the attraction feel unfinished, in one large room there was just one small... More

We called in at the visitor centre for local information and the lady that was there really was most helpful she recommended us to the Red Coat Tours which are held in the town and are free of charge where you get told lots of local information by interesting local guides plus we were given lots of leaflets to help... Fundamental and very fundamental nothing here sparkled it was just lame and very little on display don't bother wasting your time here or the mill near by where you get glared and ignored by some man with long hair on the reception desk.

What do you say about it? Good service. I am surprised that the list doesn't include one of the best services I have ever found. The Red Coat Guided Tours were amazingly good. We did two of them and they were the best value for information, history and interest that we found anywhere, and were free!
