House opening 2015:

24th & 25th May bank holiday weekend.

7th June – early September, Sunday – Thursday 2:00 – 4:30pm

Firle Place, home to the Gage family for over 500 years is a beautiful Stately Home in East Sussex. Surrounded by its extensive park and nestled amidst the tranquil Sussex downlands - South Downs National Park, Firle Place offers a perfect way to spend an afternoon.

Visitors can unravel an exciting history within this rambling, un-English-looking stately home. Inside discover an astounding collection of Old Master paintings of international importance, Sevres porcelain and exquisite furniture displayed in elegant rooms.

Enjoy light lunches, afternoon teas and cakes in the recently refurbished licensed Tea Room which is open without charge from 12:30 – 4:30pm (on house opening days).

Visitors are also encouraged to visit the ancient Parish Church of St Peter in West Firle village on the margins of the park. The Gage chapel here contains stunning monuments to the family.

Firle Place is more than just an art gallery or a beautiful country house; it is also the focus of a community which lives ad works on the Firle Estate, and, what is more, remains the much-loved home of the present Lord Gage, the 8th Viscount, and his family.

Many visitors end the day with a visit to The Ram Inn, set in the heart of Firle village. This old coach house inn has built an excellent reputation for really good local food as well as locally produced cask ales. There are also four beautiful bedrooms and an annexe, and offer bed & breakfast all year round.

Visited on a glorious sunny day so the grounds and exterior of the house looked fabulous. Visits inside are by guided tour only and we were shown around by a knowledgable lady. Interesting interior and the relatively small scale meant you could imagine living in it. Apart from the fact there were no bedrooms on the tour. We had a... More

We went, with our daughter and her boyfriend, to have tea and cake. We didn't do the tour of the house but sat at a table on the terrace at the front of the house. Unfortunately, one of the slices of cake (which wasn't cheap) was so thin you could almost see the plate through it. Not good value for... More

The location and the house are magnificent and well worth a visit. There are no gardens, by the way, just lovely parkland to drive through, deep in the Downs. Planning is of the essence. Firstly, arrive 12.30-1.00 and have a pleasant lunch on the terrace with a fantastic view over the park or in an atmospheric dining room. The house... More

Spent a lo0vely afternoon at Firle Place just out of Lewes. The house is open for afternoon tea from 12.30 and their are fuided tours of the house from 2.15 pm most days. It was a rather warn day when we visited so it was very pleasant to sit outside on the verandah and have a sandwich and drink, overlooking... More

We went to the Firle Horse and Dog show which is one of many events that are great to combine with a visit to the house and grounds. A beautiful house in a beautiful setting. Also worth a visit to the village and local pub The Ram

Came the the vintage show at firle place and what a great day out. It was a lovely day and a constant stream of traffic to get in but very well organised and didn't take long to get parked and get in. Lots of good cars and stalls to look at and a good variety of food. Will definitely an... More

the vintage fair at Firle place, was £7 per person, just to walk around a field full of what looked nothing more than a posh boot sale, every thing was over priced, land owner please take note, that people sit on the ground as there wasn't enough benches dotted around for people to sit,so NO dogs please,as I saw several relieving them selves in... The gardens open to the public are at the front and consists on a few formal beds and a very impressive water fountain. Tickets are obtained next to the cafe.... More

We visited on a Sunday afternoon and it was free flow in the house. I had been expecting a guided tour as per their website but there was none the day we went but there were information sheets to read in each room giving details regarding Pictures and furniture and room guides to answer specific questions. Most of the garden... More

We were pleasantly surprised at how interesting Firle place was! The house is beautiful and unlike many other stately homes it had a really 'normal' family home feel about the place. They have loads of gorgeous antiques and interesting pieces from all over the world, grand rooms and fancy decor.... but it's totally all mixed in amongst loads of everyday... More
