The attractive and picturesque Mermaid Street in the Centre of Rye is very popular with visitors. The pretty cobbled street runs up a steep incline from The Strand to the church of St Mary at the top of the hill. Each side it has houses with attractive architecture and halfway up there is the famous Mermaid Inn. Great for photos, but note the street is difficult to walk up hill on the cobbles. Worth a visit.

Mermaid Street is not a particularly busy street, there are not alot of shops on it but it has got lots of old buildings and a cobbled street. I would imagine it would be very popular with foreign tourists who want to know what an old English town used to look like.

It is very picturesque and you can get some nice pictures as you stroll down the hill.

Recommended for all tourists.

Rising from The Strand and climbing to the historic church of St Mary, this cobbled street is probably the most photographed in Rye. Of course you should explore it and take in the historic inns and houses but then when you get to the top carry on and explore the rest of the lanes of the old town.

Mermaid street is most of note for its picturesque inconvenience and eccentric house names. It is steep and uncomfortable to walk up.

The prettiest street in a pretty village, Mermaid Street is full of historic buildings, picturesque nooks and crannies, and day trippers.
Most of the houses seem to be lodgings for tourists, and most of it feels like a giant Instagram set more than part of a living village, but ignore this and focus on the buildings and view instead.

Even though we had to walk up hill on cobbled streets to it. The walk was well worth it. Such a beautiful street. Sadly as we were on a coach trip we didn't have time to visit anywhere else. But we will just have to come back!!!!

We visited morning, noon and evening and were lucky enough to find this magical street almost empty at times!
Be sure to photograph every angle because this cobblestone street lined with the cutest cottages with unique names will call you back again and again!

Beautiful part of Rye. The cobbled street and old houses were a joy to look at and walk along. Do visit the Lamb House at the top of the street if you’ve time as it’s very interesting.

One of the many beautiful cobbled streets in Rye, which in its own right is a truly beautiful town. It's lined with many historic buildings - well worth exploring

First ever visit to Rye. Really enjoyed the oldness of it. Intersting history and great old architecture. Stayed 2 nights at the Mermaid in a room with a 4 poster bed. It was a great stay. The food was brilliant and the portions huge. Staff were so friendly and efficient.
