About
Re-designed and refurbished exhibitions telling the story of Sudeley's royal past, Castle rooms, romantic ruins, award-winning gardens and 1000 years of fascinating history are among the many reasons to visit Sudeley Castle & Gardens, which nestles in the Cotswold Hills in the historic town of Winchcombe, Gloucestershire, 8 miles from Broadway. Sudeley is the only privately owned home in England to have a Queen (Katherine Parr, Henry VIII's sixth and last wife) buried within the grounds. With a new visitor route for 2018 which includes Castle rooms - some never before opened to the public, completely re-designed exhibitions, plus a restaurant serving delicious lunches, café, shop, play and picnic area, children's Adventure Playground (voted best in Gloucestershire), Pheasantry and a packed programme of events throughout the season, there is something for everyone at this must-see Cotswolds attraction.

Beautifully restored castle full of history
Sep. 2021
Our visit to Sudeley was fascinating. It has a long history of Royal connections (Henry VIII, Richard III, Katherine Parr, Jane Seymour, etc) and the story is very well told during a tour if the interior. (We recommend the £5 guide book to be consumed later at leisure.). The recent family history and collections are also really interesting. The restoration by the Dent family was done sympathetically and the ruins from Richard III’s addition are highly atmospheric. The gardens are not the point of Sudeley but they are a pleasure to wander through. Highly enjoyable!

Well worth a visit. Lots to see in house and surprisingly few restrictions to get close to the historical items on display. An interesting insight into the history of Sudeley and the family currently living there. Excellent informative exhibitions. Helpful friendly staff keen to share their knowledge. Grounds beautiful, full of colour and a pleasure to meander within. Loved the quirky ways hedges were tailored to represent people etc. Definitely worth the visit and the price.

Sadly neglected garden areas
Sep. 2021 • Couples
I am not sure where the beautifully kept gardens were, as mentioned in other reviews. Yes the grassed areas and trees were maintained but most of the borders and beds were neglected and scruffy. The castle was quite interesting but felt uncomfortable with so many unmasked people inside so had to rush through. Disappointed for the price overall.

Historically fascinating family owned castle and chapel, very well organised with wonderful paintings, furniture and exhibitions. Also lovely grounds to walk around. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Picturesque
Sep. 2021 • Couples
Picturesque castle in pleasant and well kept grounds. Good to walk around.
There is a decent exhibition inside the castle itself but it was busy and we were rather put off by the number of unmasked visitors and rushed through faster than the exhibition deserved. Not Sudeley’s fault as there were plenty of signs asking people to wear masks.
Enjoyed our visit though and nearby Winchcombe is also very nice.

A gorgeous castle visit
Sep. 2021
Sudeley is an amazing place with incredible gardens and a lovely stately home. The location is stunning and there is so much history to get into. The castle is gorgeous with some lovely exhibitions inside. The church is the resting place of an English queen and the gardens are beautiful.A stunning place.

Something for everyone
Aug. 2021
This was my first visit in years and one thing had very much changed for the worse. The last time we were here there were 2 ticket types - one for everything and one for just the gardens and play area. Now you only have the full ticket. As we came with young children I thought this might be a problem. However, it worked out. As expected the children weren't interested in the history of the castle but we too turns to see the castle while the children explored the gardens. There is plenty history.

The gardens were a great success for the children. Firstly they had space to run around, secondly the pheasanterie was a big hit, thirdly the pixie garden was an even bigger hit and finally the adventure playground was a great way to tire them out at the end of the visit.

Beautiful Castle and excellent cafe
Sep. 2021
We fully enjoyed our day at Sudely Castle having booked our tickets online. Follow the signs for the castle and park on-site (free parking). Toilets are clean. We went on a Katherine Parr weekend and saw staff dressed in traditional costumes. There were various guided talks happening but we wandered around on our own.
Visit the castle rooms to see how the families used to live. The guides in the rooms are so knowledgeable and we were fascinated to hear that the current family still lives at the castle for certain months of the year.
The exhibition hall was fascinating. You get a feel of the history of the castle and how it has grown over the years. The current owners also have a video reel running to tell you about them.
The gardens are gorgeous!! Truly beautiful. We walked through the many gardens, sat in some and enjoyed the views and colourful flowers.
The Terrace Cafe has the best food! We ordered veggie panini's, butternut squash soup and sandwiches. Everything was tasty and a large enough portion.
Plenty of place to sit, including outdoor picnic table seating.
Definitely work spending 4-5 hours at this beautiful castle.

Memorable day at Sudeley Castle
Sep. 2021
We had a wonderful day at Sudeley Castle joining the Kathrine Parr celebrations. The grounds and house are absolutely stunning - so picturesque. The gardens are beautifully kept and range from stunning formal gardens to a series of garden rooms. The views are stunning, particularly when framed by the beautiful ruins that sit alongside the castle.

The new exhibitions are very interesting and the history of the castle and the importance of the castle in the story of our country was brought alive by the Past Times Living History Group. They gave us a real sense of Tudor history and shared details of the day to day life of the court. We also had the opportunity to listen to a really inspirational talk by a local historian playing the role of Miles Coverdale, a talk given in the very Church where Kathrine’s funeral took place. It felt like a real privilege to be there and he provided great insight into the real story of Kathrine Parr.

In addition the visit to the castle state rooms was memorable and the knowledgeable guides gave us great insight into both the history of the castle and the wonderful family who currently call it home and are preserving the castle for future generations. It was so nice to see contemporary photographs of the family and to see their place in the history of Sudeley.

The entry price was really good value and we will definitely be returning soon. Thank you to all of the team who made it such a memorable day for us.

Wrong time of year to visit
Sep. 2021
Disappointed to be fair as I was expecting a large castle with beautiful gardens as befits the pictures on the web site but at least I saw the final resting place of Catherine Parr. A lot of work has gone into the exhibits but even so, we were in and out within an hour.
