As ever, the holiday activities for the children are well thought of. Food reasonable, lots of space to run around and plenty of wet weather activities as well

Do allow as much time as possible and be prepared to walk quite a way. There are long tunnels out to the mortar batteries - I only made it to the North battery, reached also by spiral steps with just a rope handrail. The biggest guns are quite awesome and being in action with them must have been visceral. The... More

As part of our visit to Portsmouth we called here late in the afternoon expecting to find a few big guns on a hill. How wrong could we be! The museum is enormous. We walked up to the fort, looked round the workshop which was very interesting with the tanks containing cannons needing to be stabilized out of sea water... More

Interesting on two counts-firstly the contents of the museum and secondly the structure of the fort and it's use. There is a lot of walking involved with some steep gradients. A half a day well spent. Disabled access a little difficult but not impossible.

It was a long long time ago. 2013. My dad just lost his wife (my mum) and came over to England to stay for what would have been her birthday.

I have visited this place quite a few times in the past and recently and I must say it is one of my favourite locations. It's full of history and the views over the Solent towards the Isle of Wight are stunning, especially on a good day. It's nice you can take a picnic but there is a cafe where... More

I took my children, ages 9 and 6, here. Fort Nelson is in a nice location, on a hilltop with views over Portsmouth. We travelled there by train (a 20-minute walk uphill from Portchester station), but I did notice there are sizeable free car parks at the fort. Entry is free, although there are a few optional extras which you... More
