Unexpected delight

A well kept and spacious collection. In the middle of the city, a broad range of work from ancient to modern.

I was not expecting such a huge gallery, but pleasantly surprised. Very impressed with layout,, pictures well set out, lots of information provided. It has free entry so good for families on a budget. Such a diverse range of art, something to suit all tastes.

This is a wonderful gallery with a fantastic collection very well curated. If you like late 19th and early 20th century painting, especially British, you will love it.

I'm ashamed to say that despite growing up in Southampton it wasn't until my 30's that I discovered the art gallery in the civic centre. It's a beautiful space which is much bigger than it first appears, but small if you compare it to the size of the main galleries you'd find in a bigger town like London. It's nice... More

Free of charge and always worth keeping an eye out to see what is coming. Most people make the mistake of seeing the main hall only. To the left and right upstairs there are many rooms. Some were taken over by BAS 8 but some were permanent collections. This was a spiritual high, and reminded me of the value of... More

The Art gallery in Southampton isn't appreciated enough in my opinion,it's not trying to sell its self as a national Gallery, they have different exhibits quite regularly and some permanent ones, I haven't been for a while but one of my favourite things is the wooden automata exhibit in the glass case , you put a coin in and it... The gallery is wholly taken over by BAS 8 contemporary art. The "Perseus Room" is the only piece of the permanent collection on show for the duration.

This is a very small gallery, 90% of which when I visited, was taken up with the British Art Show. If they had charged I would have asked for my money back. Would like to have seem all the paintings that had been removed to make way for the British Art show which was distinctly average.
