This area was covered in water which came up to the town walls in 1620 when the Mayflower was in port. The park must have been built as the same time as the pier during the Regency period. The Prince Regent introduced swimming in the sea to the aristocracy for one's health. Fashionable piers were then built all over Britain with architectural buildings inspired by Victoria's Empire. (Currently Kuti's Royal Thai Restaurant). Mayflower Park was re-developed in the 1930s, 1950s 1980 and is about to undergo yet more developments in the coming decade.
