This is something that you can find easily if you wonder around the city and stay down by the main enternace to the docks. We stayed at the Pig in the Wall. As with the walls generally the council have placed useful information signs around so you can easily understand the significance of the building

Next to our hotel and very historic leading up to the old town. The shore line was here but reclamation has pushed this out of sight. Was well protected and clearly very important.

Westgate is part of the Walls walk and includes the relocated timber framed Medieval Cloth Hall which was relocated to this site. Unfortunately the Hall and nearby building are not open to the public. It is as if Southampton is embarrassed by its medieval past and wants to position itself as the consumer centre of the South with its vast... More

I would give it a while if you want to see the old city walls, there is major development work going on along the route of the walls and access to some of the areas is blocked off. The noise from the building work is also very loud, it just is not a pleasant place to be at the moment.... More

Interesting medieval part of old city walls, close to high street and transport connections. Combine with a walk around the walls.

An interesting bit of the Walls of Southampton that emerge by the Commercial Quay. See also Bargate in the Commercial centre.

This is a very important gate built during the Medieval times as part of the great walls that surrounded Southampton before it was heavily blitzed during WWII and then expanded. As you will read from the picture of the plaque, it led directly to the main commercial quay of Southampton. "Through this archway marched some of the army of Henry... More

Westgate is an opening in a fairly large section of the Old City Walls of Southampton. It is the western entrance to the old city. It is in excellent condition and gives you a real feel for what the old city looked like in medieval times. Definitely worth seeing if you like historic sites - and it's free!
