One of Winchester's five superb Military Museums telling the story of 250 years of campaigning for peace by The Royal Green Jackets and their former regiments, the 43rd and 52nd (The Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry), the 60th (The King's Royal Rifle Corps) and the 95th Rifles (The Rifle Brigade). An outstanding collection of uniforms, weapons, silver, paintings and medals set over two floors. The exhibition on the first floor, entitled 'With the Rifles to Waterloo', opened in 2015 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. The centrepiece of the exhibition is the 25 square metre model of the battle with light and sound commentary. The museum is situated in Peninsula Square, formerly the barracks and the home of the Rifle Depot.

This museum in Winchester is dedicated to the Royal Green Jackets (the Rifles) with some attention given to the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, who merged with the Rifles. The Museum traces the history of the Rifles back to their earliest beginnings, and features an outstanding display of uniforms, medals, and weapons from their earliest actions, through to Afghanistan. During our visit to Winchester at the weekend we visited the museum. The lady and gentleman on the reception area were very friendly. The museum is on 2 floors with a stair chair for anyone needing assistance. The museum itself is very interesting there was lots to read and some things to interact with. They have a shop selling a... More

Packed with history presented in an interesting manner over two floors. The Waterloo presentation is worth waiting for.

What a place, so much to seeing such a lovely setting, sadly, we ran out of time and didn't see it all, we will be coming back, to at least finish what started, such a wonderful tribute to a wonderful fighting force,

A part of the museum complex in the military barracks area of Winchester, this is a really worthwhile place to visit. The main feature is a large model of the battle of Waterloo. Incredible attention to detail has gone into the building of the display. Quite remarkable and a great explanation of the battle. There are also thousands of medals... More

We had some time on ours hands and decided to take in one of the military museums in Winchester, this happened to be the first that we got to. Initial impression was very good, bright and well displayed artefacts. The star attraction is the Waterloo diorama, which guides you through the main events of the battle in about 10 minutes... An excellent quality museum. Loads for the kids. ( had to drag them away from dressing up areas!) And a quiz for them for the way round. The battle of Waterloo model was very clever. Worth watching the interactive bit for this which the kids loved. Guns they can pick up and play with too!

I have visited this museum many times and it just keeps getting better. If you like military museums and this sort of things it a must visit. Over 2 floors of history of the Royal Green Jackets / The Rifles right up to today's action. The model of the Battle of Waterloo is on of the best models I've ever... More
