Easy to find

Easy to find and wonderful to look at. Members of the general public can't enter the grounds but you can admire the buildings from the outside as well as the gardens.

Winchester college was founded by William of Wykeham, the Bishop of Winchester, at the end of the 14th century, probably making it the oldest college in England. The college houses nine Grade I, four Grade II* and eighty Grade II listed buildings and has been extended over the years. Although a quintessentially English boarding school modern facilities add to this... More

We enjoyed our tour very much and were fascinated to see old tables carved with graffiti from 200 hundred years ago. It seems amazing that the dormitories did not have heating until quite recently.

A very interesting and enjoyable tour of this fine and historic centre of learning. Viki was our guide. She knew her subject and was very professional in her approach and presentation. Nicely balanced and informative. It is a working school and this has to be respected. However, the tour provides a good feel for the tradition and history of this... More

Arrived in time (prior) to 10.15 ( scheduled departure time) and waited. Nothing going on. After 10 minutes asked the porter what was happening and he said the guide had been there but had left (he said at 10.15 but I know that isn't right). He said there was another tour at 11.30. Dealing with the public needs professionalism and... More

Decided to do this tour after reading other reviews, turned up with a couple of mins to spare and joined 4 others, we were guided by Suzanne who although softly spoken had great knowledge and answered all of the various questions asked. The tour includes some outside areas (photos allowed as long as pupils not present as well as several... More

An independent boys school first set up in 14th century by William of Wykeham to provide an education for 70 poor scholars. The motto is 'Manners makyth man'. Now totalling 700 pupils the original buildings include a chapel with fantastic windows and as the pupil population grew so additional buildings surrounding the original school building were acquired. An hour tour... More

Winchester college is one of UK's oldest public schools and the tour includes several significant school buildings including the chapel, dining hall, and Georgian school hall. The tour takes about an hour and the tour guide was very knowledgeable, clearly spoken, mixing fact with interesting stories of the origin of the school and some of its traditions. The guided tour...
