This place is unique and well worth a visit. The volunteers will explain how ancient books were written on parchment and vellum and then bound. Obviously you are not allowed to touch such fragile material, but understanding its preservation is fascinating.

It is well worth paying to see this wonderful map which has very good interpretation and interpreters. There are exhibitions leading up to it, including an exhibition of work by modern artists inspired by the map. You also see the wonderful chained library

The wonderfully historic MAppa Mundi dating from the 12th century is worth the visit Though when viewing it a tourist did ask 'where is america '? ha ha . the chained library is fairly interesting
