A unique and interesting attraction for all the family, especially for anyone interested in trains and railways.

An interesting afternoon for anyone with even the slightest interest in trains and railways with hands-on experience, demonstrations and talks by enthusiastic volunteers.

Every now and again you visit somewhere not expecting much that totally exceeds all expectations. Open on Sunday afternoons on various dates throughout the year (check the website) I parked outside in the road (free for 3 hours) not expecting to be more than about half an hour and stayed almost 3. I learned more about railways and how they... More

The signal box has been lovingly restored and the enthusiasm and knowledge of the volunteers is vast. My little boy loved being able to pull levers and ring bells and the amount of railway memorabilia is impressive. As the 'non-train spotter' of the family, I was not expecting to enjoy the visit as much as I did! Well worth a... More

Excellent couple of hours looking round. Volunteers are enthusiastic and very knowledgeable. Our 4 year old thoroughly enjoyed it as did we.

Every time I visit the old (c.1892) St Albans Signal Box there are a few more items to see. This time the island of Sodor had appeared with a small train track in the gardens with Percy running and James sat in the sidings (currently only one engine can run at a time) along with more old signals (and one... An engineer friend of mine suggested a visit to the Signal Box on one of its recent open days. I would not have gone there myself but was pleasantly surprised. The place has been lovingly restored, is very well maintained (including the garden) and the enthusiasts are extremely knowledgable and helpful. The afternoon turned out to be a wonderful trip... I had passed the signal box for years on my commute into London for years and was always curious. We finally went to visit when some friends came to stay who were keen on railway history. It was a very good experience. The volunteers were friendly and helpful and welcoming. We were taken round by a guide who revealed the... More

I finally succumbed after my son who is a signalling fanatic pestered me to take him.. I am truly in awe of what the volunteers have created and preserved.. I don't really understand railway signalling but I do now..It was a great day out and enabled my lad to have some real hands on experience pulling levers which he loves... More

We decided to take a stroll on the Alban Way to see the Abbey station but turned off the path too soon and my partner said we should just cross over the bridge to see the signal house. Great decision as the volunteers were really keen and passionate to give us a good explanation of all that went on there... More

This was a fascinating visit, largely thanks to the enthusiasm and knowledge of the volunteers on duty and we spent much longer there than anticipated. My only reservation is that anyone with mobility difficulties might find it hard to climb the steep steps to the upper floor which contains the most interesting features of the visit.
